BOX SCORE

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Sophomore Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) threw 5.0 innings of one-run ball and junior second baseman Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) went 2-for-5 as William Paterson (22-11) posted a 4-2 baseball victory at New Paltz (15-15) April 23.

Junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and Pasternak singled to start the game and moved up a base on a groundout before junior shortstop Rich Guillod's (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) sacrifice fly handed WP a quick 1-0 lead.

Sophomore third baseman Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) started the top of the second inning with a double down the left-field line and later scored on junior first baseman Anthony DeEsposito's (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) two-bagger.

The Hawks pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of three singles and a bases-loaded walk.

The Pioneers added a third-inning run when three straight bases on balls set up Arnold for a sac fly that drove in senior designated hitter Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.).

Walks issued to junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and Arnold and a Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) sacrifice led to a DeEsposito sac fly to right, making it a 4-1 score in the eighth.

New Paltz used a walk and two singles to finish the scoring with a single run during the home half of the ninth.

DeEsposito drove in two of WP's runs.  Gaccione (2-2) scattered four hits, striking out one hitter and walking one.  Senior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tossed 3.0 shutout innings of relief, and sophomore Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) earned his first save, giving up a run and two hits in 1.0 inning.

Matt Prescia led the Hawks at the plate, finishing 2-for-3.  Starter Christian Huertas took the loss (0-2), surrendering two runs and four hits in 2.0 innings.

William Paterson will play at Montclair State Thursday, April 25, at 3:30 p.m.
