Baseball Rallies, But Falls Short at St. Joseph’s-Long Island

Pioneers Can’t Overcome Early Deficit

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – William Paterson (12-5) dropped a 10-7 baseball decision to St. Joseph's–Long Island (8-10) April 2 at Gregg Alfano Field.

The Golden Eagles put five runners on base in the bottom of the first inning and were able to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead.  The Pioneers responded in the top of the second.  Junior shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) led off the inning with a walk and was cmoved around the bases by way of a Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) single and a sacrifice bunt laid down by freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus). A RBI-groundout by senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) plated Pasternak to cut the deficit, 4-1.

An RBI-single by Brian Hannigan and a two-run single to right-center by Anthony Andreani extended the St. Joseph's lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the third inning.  With two runners on in the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Eagles tacked on two more runs with a double down the left-field line by Hannigan, who later scored on a wild pitch to make it a 10-1 contest.

Garguilo led off the top of the Pioneer fifth with a double to right field.  Junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) tripled to right center, allowing Garguilo to cross home plate.  Guillod scored on a Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) single to left field to allow William Paterson to make it a 10-3 score.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers found some life in their bats.  Arnold tripled to right-center field and scored on a single by Garguilo.  Gibbons tripled to right-center field allowing Garguilo to score.  Junior A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) walked, and Guillod roped his second hit of the day to score Gibbons.  Haughney's single to center plated Flores to put the Pioneers behind, 10-7.

Glenn Patriss (2-0) secured the win for St. Joseph's-Long Island, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing three earned runs.  Steven Szobesky earned the save with 3.0 innings of work, striking out three.  The loss went to sophomore righty Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) ,who allowed seven runs (five earned) in 3.0 innings.  Senior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) gave up three runs in 2.0 innings of relief, and freshman Derek Hyland (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) tossed 3.0 scoreless relief innings. 

William Paterson will play at Ramapo Thursday, April 4, at 3:00 p.m.
