Baseball Drops 7-5 Decision at Drew

Pioneers Can’t Come Up with Timely Hits to Defeat Rangers

Senior Ryan Gibbons went 2-for-4 and hit a home run at Drew.
BOX SCORE

MADISON, N.J. – William Paterson (20-8) left 13 runners stranded, falling short during a 7-5 baseball decision at Drew (12-18) April 17.

Three straight singles and a squeeze play handed the Rangers a 2-0 first-inning lead, and Drew squeezed in another runner for a 3-0 score at the end of the second.

Junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored thanks to a Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) single through the left side during the top half of the third inning.

The Pioneers put together a two-out rally in the fourth.  Junior shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) singled and freshman designated hitter Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) walked before freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo's (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) bunt single loaded the bases.  Flores drew a base on balls to force across Pasternak and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Three base hits, an RBI-groundout and a balk pushed Drew's lead to 6-2 during the home half of the same frame, and another balk tacked on an additional run for the Rangers in the fifth.

Senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) walked and Pasternak singled to left center to put runners on the corners with one out in the seventh.  Pinch hitter Mike Arnold's (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) fielder's choice groundout plated Gibbons, and back-to-back singles off the bats of Garguilo and Flores resulted in one more run.  Gibbons' solo home run over the right-field fence to open the top of the ninth inning finished the scoring.

Pasternak was 3-for-5 with a run scored, and Gibbons went 2-for-4 with a double, homer and two runs scored.  Flores finished 2-for-3 and contributed two RBI.

Sophomore starter Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) allowed six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings (1-2), while senior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tossed 2.0 innings, surrendering one unearned run and two hits.  Sophomore Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and classmate Kevin Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) each pitched 1.0 inning of scoreless relief.

Al Krause led Drew at the plate, going 3-for-4.  Starter Bobby Miskura (3-3) gave up three runs and nine hits in 6.1 innings.

William Paterson will host No. 2/3 Kean Thursday, April 18, at 3:30 p.m.
