CAMDEN, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (19-7, 7-2 NJAC) bounced back from a 3-1 opening loss to win the back end of a doubleheader at Rutgers-Camden (16-13, 3-6 NJAC), 11-3, April 13.

GAME ONE
The Pioneers took the early lead but couldn't hold on during an opening 3-1 loss to the Scarlet Raptors.

Junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) reached on an error to start the top of the fourth inning and advanced to third thanks to senior catcher Vin Fondacaro's (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) double.  A sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) handed WP a 1-0 lead.

That was short lived, though, as Rutgers-Camden crossed the plate twice during the home half of the frame.  Dave Prager hit a one-out single and moved to second on a passed ball before a walk issued to George Spingler.  Donnie Haines drove in both runners with a two-out double for a 2-1 score.

Adrian Gonzalez started the bottom of the sixth with a double and later scored on a double-play ground ball, making it a 3-1 margin.

Junior shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) was 2-for-4 to lead the Pioneer offense.  Senior Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) suffered his first loss of the season (5-1), allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight in 7.0 innings.  Sophomore Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) struck out one of the three hitters he faced in the eighth.

Prager was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Scarlet Raptors.  Adam Satanoff pitched a complete game (5-2), giving up one unearned run and seven hits, registering three walks and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO
Junior Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) tossed 7.0 innings of one-run ball as William Paterson salvaged a split with an 11-3 victory.

The Pioneers wasted no time, scoring three times during their first at-bat.  With two outs, junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) walked, Fondacaro singled and Haughney drew a base on balls.  Senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons' (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) double to right-center field cleared the bases for the first runs of the game.

Prager's solo home run made it a 3-1 score after three, but WP scratched out two fourth-inning scores.  Haughney reached on an error and junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) singled to center before both runners moved up 90 feet due to a balk.  Sophomore designated hitter Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled in Haughney, and a Flores base hit through the left side plated Ptaszynski.

William Paterson took command with three runs during the top half of the sixth.  Gibbons started the frame with a solo homer to right, Ptaszynski singled and Arnold hit a RBI-triple to right.  A Flores base hit allowed Arnold to trot home and make it an 8-1 advantage.

Three more runs crossed the plate for the Pioneers in the eighth.  Freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) hit a one-out single and took second on a wild pitch.  He scored via a Flores double to right, Pasternak hit a RBI-single to center, and a later Haughney base hit handed WP an 11-1 edge.

Rutgers-Camden used three hits and two walks to finish the scoring with a pair of eighth-inning runs.

Flores finished 3-for-6 with a double, three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.  Gibbons went 2-for-4 and added a double, homer and four RBI, while Fondacaro, Ptaszynski, Arnold and Garguilo each contributed a pair of hits.

Jensen (4-1) scattered eight hits, striking out 11 and walking four.  Junior Anthony DeEsposito (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) gave up two runs and three hits in 0.2 inning, and Moran tossed the final 1.2 innings, striking out four and allowing a hit and a walk.

Prager, Spingler and Shaune Collins all had two-hit efforts for the Raptors.  Starter Tommy Potts took the loss (3-3), giving up seven hits and seven runs (five earned) in 5.0 innings.
