BOX SCORE

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Senior first baseman Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) finished 3-for-3 with five RBI and sophomore Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) pitched 6.0 innings of one-run ball as the William Paterson baseball team (17-6) rolled past Centenary (14-13-1) for a 13-1 victory April 10 at Diamond Nation.

The Pioneers scored during six of their first seven at-bats, including a single first-inning run after junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) hit a one-out double to left center and Fondacaro singled him in.

WP crossed the plate twice in the second.  A Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) sacrifice fly drove in freshman designated hitter Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional), who had reached base after being hit by a pitch, and freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), who had singled, later scampered home thanks to a wild pitch.

A solo home run by junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and a Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) sac fly made it a 5-0 score by the middle of the third.  Ptaszynski's ground-rule double plated Garguilo to stretch it to a 6-0 lead during the top half of the fourth inning.

The Cyclones used a single, hit by pitch, walk and sacrifice fly to get on the scoreboard during the home half of the fifth.  William Paterson answered with three runs during its next at-bat, taking advantage of a Fondacaro bases-loaded walk and a two-run double off the bat of junior catcher Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge).

Four hits led to four WP runs in the seventh.  Flores hit a RBI-single back up the middle, and he and Ptaszynski touched home when Fondacaro launched his first home run of the season.

Haughney finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Ptaszynski was 3-for-5 and added a double, RBI and three runs scored.  Flores went 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored, while Gibbons finished 2-for-3 and contributed a double and two runs.

Gaccione (1-1) struck out three and walked two in 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits.  Junior Anthony DeEsposito (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) gave up a walk and a hit in 2.0 innings, and sophomore Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the ninth.

Mike Crowe accounted for two of the Cyclones' four hits.  Eddie Casiano took the loss (1-2), giving up three runs and five hits in 2.0 innings as the starter.

William Paterson will visit The College of New Jersey Thursday, April 11, at 3:30 p.m.
