WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (4-8) began its 2013 home schedule with a split against Drew (8-6) at Pioneer Softball Park March 27.  The Rangers took down the Pioneers, 5-0, in game one, and William Paterson took game two, 5-2.

GAME ONE
Sophomore Laura D'Ornellas (4-1) pitched 8.0 scoreless innings as Drew used an extra-inning rally to get past the Pioneers, 5-0.

Both teams exchanged scoreless half-innings heading into the sixth when Drew loaded the bases with no outs. The Rangers singled, walked and were hit by a pitch to bring up sophomore Rebecca Hutsabaut.  Freshman Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) struck out Hutsabaut for the first out.  The next batter, senior Jeramie Barletta, flew out to left and freshman Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) gunned out senior Jennifer Mateo at home for an inning-ending double-play, letting the Pioneers escape without letting in a run.

The Pioneers started off the top of the seventh inning with freshman Liz DeVenio (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) reaching after being hit on the foot.  Wimmershoff followed that up with a bunt single, giving the Pioneers runners on first and second with no outs.  Tracey Geller blooped one to the shortstop Barletta who made a diving catch, and threw out the runner at second for a double-play.  The Pioneers would ultimately not get a run across, as Wimmershoff was caught stealing to end the seventh inning with the score still tied, 0-0.

As per the international tiebreaker, the Rangers started the top of the eighth inning with sophomore Antoinette Tovar on second base.  Mateo reached on an error and advanced to second while Tovar advanced to third on the play.  D'Ornellas brought across the first run of the game by grounding into a fielder's choice that brought home Tovar.  Senior Lexie Forsell would follow that up with an RBI-single up the middle, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.  After a Hutsebout single and a Barletta strikeout, sophomore Casey Reggiani knocked in two more with a double to center.  Kate McNamara singled home the final run, giving Drew a 5-0 lead.

The Pioneers would advance a runner to third in the bottom half of the inning, but a sacrifice bunt, a groundout and a pop-up would end their comeback hopes.

Batelli (2-3) gave up three earned runs and struck out six in 8.0 innings as four Pioneers had single-hit performances.

McNamara went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Reggiani went 1-for-4 and drove in a game-high two runs.

GAME TWO
Junior Katelyn Miele (Flanders N.J./Pope John XXIII) went 2-for-3 and scored twice, and Wimmershoff went 2-for-3 with two RBI as William Paterson took the second game of the doubleheader, 5-2 over Drew.

Miele ripped a single and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt to start off the bottom half of the first inning for the Pioneers.  Senior Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) brought Miele home with an RBI-single to right and gave the Pioneers an early 1-0 advantage.  The Pioneers would load the bases but leave all three runners stranded after sophomore Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hil, N.J./Overbrook Senior) flied out to end the first inning.

Miele reached base again, this time on a two-out walk in the bottom of the second, and scored on a Wimmershoff triple to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead after two.

The Rangers would answer back in the fifth with one run after Barletta doubled to center and later scored on a fielding error, cutting the Pioneer lead in half at 2-1.

The Pioneers would answer right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  Senior Kelsey Hand (Mountainville N.Y./Cornwall Central) started the two-out rally with a single to center that was followed by a Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) single to give William Paterson runners on first and second.  Junior Danielle Capozzi (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) had a pinch-hit RBI-single and Rouse would drive in one more to give the Pioneers a 4-1 lead after five innings.

Barletta would get one run back for the Rangers, singling down the right-field line to drive in D'Ornellas and bring the score to 4-2.

William Paterson would add one more in the sixth and Dys would put down the Rangers in order in the seventh to finish off the win for the Pioneers.

Dys (1-3) went the distance, giving up only one earned run on four hits to notch her first win of the 2013 campaign.  Dys helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 and scoring one run.

Barletta went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and six other Rangers accounted for the other six scattered hits in the contest.

William Paterson will visit Rutgers-Newark on Friday, March 29, at 3:00 p.m. for its first New Jersey Athletic Conference double-header.
