BOX SCORE

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – The William Paterson baseball team (9-3) finished its Spring Break trip to Winter Haven, Fla., with a 10-3 victory against Endicott (4-2) March 22.

A triple off the bat of junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and a passed ball gave WP a 1-0 first-inning lead, but the Gulls tied it up in the second thanks to a walk, fielder's choice, stolen base and two-base throwing error.

The Pioneers pushed across a pair of runs in the fourth.  Freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) singled and were sacrificed over by Flores.  Senior catcher Vin Fondacaro's (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) RBI-groundout plated Garguilo, and junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) singled in Gibbons for a 3-1 lead.

Endicott again answered, tying the score in the fifth thanks to a double, two singles and a pair of groundouts.

William Paterson broke the game open during the home half of the frame, hanging three runs on the scoreboard.  Junior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) singled up the middle and was sacrificed to second by junior shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield).  Freshman designated hitter Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) was hit by a pitch but was out at second on Garguilo's fielder's choice, giving WP runners on the corners with two outs.  Gibbons doubled in both runners, then scored himself via a Flores base hit to left.

Guillod led off the sixth with a walk, stole second and raced home on junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski's (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) single to right, making it a 7-3 game.  Gibbons added one to that total in the seventh, starting the inning with a single, stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on Flores' sac fly.

The Pioneers scored in their fifth straight at-bat, tacking on three runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Ptaszynski singled through the left side and Haughney sent a base hit up the middle before being lifted for pinch runner Anthony DeEsposito (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial).  A wild pitch advanced both runners before Pasternak's single back to the pitcher drove in Ptaszynski.  An error loaded the bases, and DeEsposito was able to scamper home while Endicott turned a double play.

Gibbons was 3-for-5 with a double, stolen base, two RBI and three runs scored, and Haughney and Ptaszynski both finished 3-for-5.

Junior Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) tossed 7.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits to even his record at 1-1.  Freshman Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) walked one and struck out one in 2.0 innings of relief.

Five different Gulls accounted for Endicott's five hits.  Starter Tyler Hill took the loss (0-1), surrendering seven runs (six earned) and 12 hits in 5.0 innings.

William Paterson will visit Stevens Wednesday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m.
