BOX SCORE
WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – William Paterson (8-3) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and cruised past UMass Boston (3-6) for an 11-2 baseball victory March 21.
Junior third baseman
Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) was 3-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBI, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Senior outfielder
Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) finished 3-for-5 and scored three times.
The Pioneers struck for four runs in the top of the first. Gibbons singled to lead off, junior outfielder
AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) had a base hit and senior first baseman
Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) doubled them in. Guillod's single up the middle moved Fondacaro to third, junior second baseman
Rob Pasternak's (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) sacrifice fly played Fondacaro, and after Guillod stole second he scored thanks to a base hit off the bat of junior catcher
Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge).
WP tacked on two more in the third. Guillod's one-out triple was followed by a Pasternak double down the left-field line. A Haughney walk and a
K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) double made it a 6-0 score.
The Beacons crossed the plate twice during the home half of the frame, taking advantage of two singles, a pair of wild pitches and an error.
William Paterson got those two runs back in the fourth inning. Gibbons and Flores singled, and were sacrificed over by Fondacaro. Gibbons scored on an error on the play, and Flores later trotted home via a fielder's choice.
WP finished the scoring with a three-run eighth. Abel singled up the middle and Gibbons sent a base hit through the right side. They both advanced on a groundout, and Fondacaro's two-out single plated Abel. Guillod's two-run double to left field made it an 11-2 margin.
Fondacaro was 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, Flores finished 2-for-5 and scored twice, and Abel went 2-for-4.
