BOX SCORE

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – Freshmen Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) and Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) each contributed three hits as the William Paterson baseball team (5-1) began its Spring Break trip with a 10-5 victory against Worcester State (2-3) March 16 in Winter Haven, Fla.

The Pioneers wasted no time, scoring twice during the top of the first inning.  Junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) drew a leadoff walk and Gibbons was issued a one-out base on balls.  Kenny later singled in both runners for a quick 2-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly and a RBI-groundout tied the score during the bottom half of the frame, but junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) doubled in Garguilo for a 3-2 second-inning score.

Ptaszynski hit a one-out single through the left side, Gibbons walked and junior third baseman Rich Guillod's (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) fielder's choice gave WP runners on first and second in the fourth.  After a double steal, Kenny doubled to center field, pushing William Paterson ahead by a 5-2 count.

WP blew the game open with a four-run sixth.  Senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) started the inning by being hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third.  Kenny's one-out single plated Gibbons, and he was lifted for pinch runner Dave Rainville (Ringwood, N.J./Eastern Christian).  A flyout was followed by a Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) double down the left-field line, and freshman shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) drove in both runners with his base hit to center field.  Ptaszynski later drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing across Abel for a 9-2 advantage.

Worcester State put together three hits, including a solo homer, for a 9-4 margin after six, but Flores' sacrifice fly handed William Paterson a 10-4 lead in the eighth.  A single, two wild pitches and a passed ball gave Worcester State an unearned run to finish the scoring during the home half of the ninth.

Kenny finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, and Garguilo was 3-for-4, stole two bases and scored a run.  Haughney and Ptaszynski each contributed a pair of hits.

Senior Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) improved to 3-0, striking out four hitters and allowing four runs and seven hits in 7.0 innings.  Sophomore Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) pitched a scoreless eighth, and classmate Kevin Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) struck out two and walked one while surrendering a single run in the ninth.

Nick Gezotis contributed three of the Lancers' nine hits.  Starter Cruz Rosado took the loss (0-1), giving up five runs on five hits in 4.0 innings.

William Paterson will play Western New England Sunday, March 17, at 11:00 a.m.
