GAME HIGHLIGHTS
WAYNE, N.J. – Senior catcher
Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) finished 5-for-7 with five RBI to help William Paterson (3-1) cruise to a 15-0, 9-4 baseball sweep of visiting Manhattanville (2-6) March 10.
GAME ONE
WP took the lead in the first inning and didn't look back en route to a 15-0 dominant win of the day's opening contest.
The Pioneers jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning. Junior outfielder
AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) led off the inning with a walk, junior second baseman
Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./ Morris Hills) singled, and senior outfielder
Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) drew a walk to load the bases. Fondacaro drove in two runs with a single up the third-base side. A double play advanced Gibbons to third, and freshman shortstop
K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) knocked a single to the left side to score Gibbons.
The Pioneers opened things up in the third inning with nine runs. Fondacaro singled up the middle to lead things off. Following a fielder's choice, Abel made it to first on an error by the third basemen that advanced freshman first baseman
Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) to third. Junior third baseman
Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Haughney, and let Abel advanced to second. Freshman designated hitter
Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) got into the action with a single up the middle, advancing Guillod to second and Abel to third. Freshman outfielder
Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) continued things for the Pioneers with a bases-loaded single through the left side, scoring Guillod and Abel, and Flores singled up the middle to plate Kenny. Ptaszynski had a single to third that drove in Garguilo, Gibbons drew a walk, and Fondacaro delivered a bases-loaded RBI-single for the second time in three innings, grounding a ball through the right side to score Flores. Haughney reached on a fielder's choice, plating Ptaszynski, Abel reached on a fielder's choice that knocked in Gibbons, and Fondacaro scored on a hit by Guillod to the left side.
The Pioneers continued the scoring in the fourth with one run. Garguilo led off with an infield single, pinch hitter
Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) got in on the action with a single up the middle, and a double play advanced Garguilo to third. A fielding error by the second basemen was enough to allow Garguilo to scamper home and make it a 13-0 score.

Haughney doubled down the left-field line to start the fifth inning. Guillod immediately followed with a two-bagger off the top of the left-field fence, plating Haughney for the 14th run of the game.
The Valiants hit
Jared Guglielmino (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) and Gibbons to start the sixth inning, and Guglielmino eventually crossed the plate thanks to a RBI-groundout by Haughney.
Fondacaro led the high-powered WP offense by going 3-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring once. Ptaszynski also finished 3-for-4, driving in one run and scoring twice.
Senior
Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) made his second start of the year, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings and giving up one hit while registering three strikeouts and two walks (2-0). Sophomore
Kevin Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) pitched 1.0 inning of scoreless relief, allowing one hit, and freshman
Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) allowed two hits while tossing the final inning.
Alex Basso allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits in 2.1 innings, striking out two and walking two for the Valiants (1-1). Joe Pareres allowed six runs (one earned) on eight hits and one walk. Zach Zareva pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one run on no hits and one walk.
GAME TWO
The Pioneers continued their dominance, winning the second half of the doubleheader by a 9-4 count.
The Valiants got on the board first in the second inning with one run. John Bucci led things off with a single to left field, Bobby Guerra followed up with another single to left and Sam Garito singled to right field to load the bases for the Valiants. Bucci scored on a close play at home after Kurt Hommen hit a sacrifice fly to the right fielder.
The Valiants added another run in the fourth inning. Guerra smacked a ball right up the middle, followed by another hit up the middle by Jordanis Nunez. Hommen drove in Guerra for his second RBI of the day with an infield single to the third-base side.
The Pioneers took the lead with another explosive inning, just like Game One, scoring nine runs in the fourth. Gibbons led off with a double down the left-field line, Fondacaro advanced Gibbons to third on an infield single and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Haughney drew a walk to load the bases for the Pioneers. Abel's fielder's choice, scored Gibbons, Guillod hit an infield single towards the third baseman that scored Fondacaro, and Kenny knocked in two more runs on a hit and throwing error by the shortstop. Garguilo laid down a sacrifice bunt to squeeze in Guillod, and Flores drove in Kenny on a single to the left side. Flores stole second to get into scoring position, and Ptaszynski continued the hitting with an RBI-double to the left side to plate Flores. Gibbons got on base with a single to left field, and Fondacaro continued his success by driving in two more runs with a single to right.
The Valiants crossed the plate twice in the ninth in its comeback attempt. Kevin Brady singled to right field, Nick Euvino drew a walk, and both runners then advanced on a passed ball. Johnny LoVetere drove in a run with a sacrifice hit to the pitcher, and Sean Ferguson knocked in Euvino with a base hit up the middle.
Flores led the Pioneers' offense, going 3-for-3 while stealing three bases. Fondacaro was 2-for-3, driving in two runs, and GIBBONS and Kenny each contributed a pair of hits.
Senior
James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) started his first game of the season for the Pioneers, going 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, one walk while striking out two (1-0). Freshman
Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one. O'Shea came on in the seventh, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk.
Micheal Lyon started his second game of the season for the Valiants, allowing nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out two (0-2). Julian Ponce pitched 0.2 scoreless inning, giving up one hit, and Donny Pitasi contributed 1.0 inning of one-hit relief. Ryan Binderman walked one of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth.
William Paterson will play at U.S. Merchant Marine Wednesday, March 13, at 3:30 p.m.
