WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson field hockey team (6-5) found the back of the cage once during each half, outlasting Susquehanna (6-5) for a 2-1 victory Oct. 2.
The Pioneers capitalized on the first scoring opportunity of the game when senior
Jacqui Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) knocked in a long hit by classmate
Annalis Mitcho (Glassboro, N.J./Gloucester County Institute of Technology) during a penalty corner, making it a 1-0 score less than nine minutes into the contest.
Senior
Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) made that score hold up with 1:19 remaining in the half, diving to her right and turning away Erica Reichart's penalty stroke with a stick save.
Reichart scored the equalizer in the 54th minute, drawing the ball around to the right and scoring from the near post, but WP recaptured the lead 91 seconds later when their third shot of a penalty corner hit the backboard of the cage, senior forward
Brianne Cox's (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton Twp.) league-leading 11th goal of the season off another Mitcho assist.
Statz had five saves for the Pioneers, aided by defensive saves from freshman
Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) and sophomore
Felicia Wetzel (Hardyston, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional). Senior Margaret Ruth finished with four stops for the Crusaders.
William Paterson will host No. 11 The College of New Jersey Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:00 p.m.
