Late Goal Thwarts Men’s Soccer, 1-0

Pioneers Can't Capitalize on Opportunities at TCNJ

Box Score EWING, N.J. – A goal in the 82nd minute was the difference as William Paterson (7-4-2, 2-3-1 NJAC) suffered a 1-0 men's soccer loss at The College of New Jersey (8-4-2, 3-2-1 NJAC) Oct. 12.

WP had the better of play in the opening half, forcing the Lions' Maciej Libucha to make a pair of tough saves. Pioneer forward Hugh Riley (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) took a feed inside the box, but Libucha came out to stifle the shot attempt and keep the game scoreless. Late in the period, Jason Padilla (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) found the ball at his feet inside the penalty area, but once again Libucha raced out to make the stop.

The second half was more evenly played, but the match remained scoreless. WP nearly took the lead when midfielder Mike Conte (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) hit a shot that was destined for the right corner, but defender Nick Costelloe was there to make the.

A hard foul outside the box gave the Lions a restart with less than nine minutes to play. Kevin McCartney capitalized with the game-winning goal, lacing a shot to the right-hand corner.

Freshman Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) made one save for the Pioneers, and Libucha had six stops for TCNJ as WP enjoyed a 14-7 shot advantage and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.

William Paterson will play at St. Joseph's-Long Island Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 7:00 p.m.
