BOX SCORE

WAYNE, N.J. – A combined 10-run seventh and eighth innings propelled the William Paterson baseball team (18-5, 3-1 NJAC) to a 12-4 victory against New Jersey City (9-13, 0-4 NJAC) April 6 at Jeff Albies Field.

Back-to-back singles by Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) and James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) sparked the Pioneer offense in the bottom of the third frame.  Sophomore outfielder A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) singled down the right-field line to score Ptaszynski.  Senior Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) rolled a ground-ball fielder's choice that allowed Lauer to scamper home to put the Pioneers ahead, 2-0.

New Jersey City responded in its half of the fifth inning.  Pete Senyszyn walked and moved to second on a Michael Patterson fielder's choice.  Both runners were able to advance a base as Kevin DeMauro grounded out to the right side.  Freshman shortstop Michael Martucci's right-field single allowed Senyszyn and Patterson to score, knotting the score at 2-2.

Patterson led off the seventh inning with a single for the Gothic Knights, and then stole second.  Martucci singled to right field to put runners on the corners with one out.  Andrew Rivera singled to the pitcher to reach safely, and moved to second base on a throwing error by the Pioneers defense that allowed Patterson to race home.  Alex Weinstein's sacrifice fly plated Martucci to give NJCU a 4-2 lead.  The Pioneers answered in the bottom half of the frame stringing together a rally of its own.  A walk and two base hits loaded the bases for WP, allowing Montanile to draw a walk, to score a run.  Junior catcher Vin Fondacaro's (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) bases-clearing double allowed the Pioneers to take a 6-4 lead.  A balk with the bases loaded allowed another run to come across for WP.

William Paterson led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run to right field by junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock).  Montanile singled, Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) walked and Fondacaro was hit by a pitch to load the bases for senior shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst).  Dorio singled through the left side to score Montanile and Dan Alcala (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional), who pinch ran for Derner.  Senior Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) launched a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Fondacaro, and Dorio scored on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers a 12-4 win.

Junior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) started for WP tossing 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out two.  The win went to freshman reliever Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional), who allowed one earned run in 1.0 inning.  Junior J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) and freshman Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) each tossed 1.0 inning in relief, not allowing a run.  .

The Gothic Knights' loss went to Nelson Maldonado, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing seven earned runs, fanning three.  Orlando Bolano and Juan Cruz combined for 1.0 inning of relief work, allowing five earned runs.  Martucci finished his day 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Rivera went 2-for-4 with a run batted in.
