JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Fifth-year head coach
Mike Lauterhahn earned his 100th victory as the William Paterson baseball team (17-5, 2-1 NJAC) recorded its second conference victory, 7-2, at New Jersey City (9-12, 0-3 NJAC) April 5.
Freshman Michael Martucci reached on an error by the Pioneer defense to lead off the second inning. Martucci moved to second on a Rob Roman walk, and later came around to score on an Andrew Rivera single. Freshman Matthew Wagner singled through the left side to score Roman, and give the Gothic Knights a 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore
Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) led off the top of the fourth frame with a walk, and advanced to second on a
Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) bunt single. Junior
James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners, and Ptaszynski was able to score on a ground out to the right side by junior
Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock). Somers was able to cross home on a fielding error by the Jersey City defense to knot the score at 2-2.
Back-to-back one-out singles by
Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) and Ptaszynski sparked the Pioneer offense in the top of the fifth. Lauer's single down the left-field line plated Fondacaro to give WP a 3-2 edge.
Flores laid down a bunt single and stole second to lead off the WP sixth. Senior
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) reached on a fielding error that allowed Flores to move to third. Senior
Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) singled through the right side to allow Flores to score, and Montanile was able to scamper home on an RBI ground-out by classmate
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) to put the Pioneers in front, 5-2.
Montanile's single to center field led off the top of the eighth frame for WP, followed by a walk issued to Derner. Both runners advanced on a Dorio sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position with one out. Fondacaro singled to left-center, allowing both runners to trot home to stretch the lead, 7-2.
Junior lefty
James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) threw the complete-game victory for WP, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out three. Junior Pedro Garcia suffered the loss for New Jersey City, surrendering two runs in 4.1 innings.
Fondacaro went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Derner was 2-for-3 with a RBI and one run scored.
William Paterson will host New Jersey City University on Friday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m.
