BOX SCORE

NEWARK, N.J. –The William Paterson baseball team (28-10, 10-6 NJAC) earned a 6-2 victory at Rutgers-Newark (15-22, 4-12 NJAC) April 27 at Riverfront Stadium.

The Pioneers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with back-to-back two-out singles by sophomore second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) and senior Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic).  Senior Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) drew a walk to load the bases, and classmate Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) delivered a single through the left side to score Ptaszynski and Gibbons for a 2-0 lead.

WP used another two-out rally to add to its lead in the top of the fourth frame.  Senior shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) singled to center, and junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) roped a ball that rolled to the wall in center field for an inside-the-park home run to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead.

Junior James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) laced a one-out single in the Pioneer half of the sixth inning, and was followed by an A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) double down the left-field line.  Lauer was able to score on a sacrifice fly by Dorio that was lifted to left field to extend the William Paterson lead, 5-0.  The Scarlet Raiders responded in the bottom of the frame on a Tom Miller single that plated Vin Troisi, who had reached on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Ptaszynski and Montanile both singled to lead off the seventh inning, and Somers' ground-ball fielder's choice was enough to allow Ptaszynski to score, extending the Pioneer lead to 6-1.  Rutgers-Newark added another run in the bottom of the ninth, starting with a leadoff walk by Jimmy Napolitano.  A stolen base and a ground ball put Napolitano on third and an error by the Pioneer defense off the bat of outfielder Jason McCluskey allowed the runner to score for a final 6-2 score.

Sophomore Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) improved to 7-0 on the season tossing 8.0 innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits, striking out three.  Junior Glenn Flora (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) allowed one run (none earned) in 1.0 innings of relief work.

Connor Medler suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits, striking out seven.  Nick Evans tossed 2.0 innings in relief allowing no hits.  Miller went 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Somers went 1-for-3 with three runs-batted-in, while Gibbons was 1-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.  Ptaszynski finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

William Paterson will visit the Kean Cougars for a NJAC double-header on Saturday, April 28 at 11:30 a.m.
