WAYNE, N.J. – Senior first baseman
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) recorded the second home run of his career and drove-in four runs as the William Paterson baseball team (26-10, 8-6 NJAC) took a 14-4 decision against New Paltz (18-18, 5-10 SUNYAC) April 24 at Jeff Albies Field.

Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) led off the game with a double to left-center. Montanile drew a one-out walk, and senior
Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) blasted his 13th home run of the year into left-center field to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers added runs in the bottom of the second, starting with a leadoff walk issued to junior catcher
Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock). Senior shortstop
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) laid a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line to move the runner, and Gibbons reached safely with his second hit of the day. Sophomore second baseman
Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) delivered a single through the middle of the infield to plate Fondacaro. Montanile laced a ground ball to the shortstop that allowed Gibbons to cross home, extending the Pioneer lead to 5-0.
New Paltz responded in the top of the third as senior Mike Marash singled to center field to lead off the inning. Junior infielder Steven Morse doubled to left, giving the Hawks second and third with no outs. Senior designated hitter Jake Cameron lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing the run to score to make it a 5-1 game. The Pioneers added five runs in the bottom of the frame, sparked by a leadoff single by freshman
Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont). Sophomore
A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was hit by a pitch, and Dorio singled to left field to allow Arnold to score. Gibbons lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Flores, and Ptaszynski singled through the left side to score Dorio. Montanile blasted his second career home run over the fence in left-center to stretch the Pioneer lead, 10-1. WP added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as a single by Fondacaro plated Arnold, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Fondacaro came around to score the second run of the inning on a Ptaszynski single to left to extend the lead, 12-1.
The Pioneers put up two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the first on a Montanile single to left field that drove in Gibbons, who had previously reached on a single through the right side. The second came on a fielder's choice by
Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) that plated sophomore
Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield), who pinch ran for Ptaszynski.
The Hawks added a run in the top of the seventh sparked by a two-out double by Cameron, who then advanced on a wild pitch. Sophomore catcher David Lostaglio singled through the right side to allow Cameron to cross home plate to make it a 14-2 game. New Paltz added two more runs in the top of the ninth for a 14-4 final score. Marash drew a one-out walk, and advanced to second on a Morse single to third base. Lostaglio drew a walk to load the bases, and senior Billy Ruggiero grounded a ball down the first-base line that was misplayed, allowing two runs to come around to score.
Freshman
Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) improved to 6-0 on the season with the win, allowing one earned run on eight hits in 6.0 innings. Sophomore
Pete Savastano (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) threw 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits. Freshman
Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) closed out the game for the Pioneers, allowing two runs (none earned) in 1.0 inning.
Junior Michael Pinnola suffered the loss for New Paltz allowing 10 earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched. Freshman Roy Missal tossed 3.0 innings allowing four earned runs on nine hits, striking out two. Senior John Schmidt and classmate Nick Monaco combined for the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit. Morse and Cameron were both 2-for-4 on the day for the Hawks.
Montanile went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Ptaszynski went 4-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Gibbons finished the day 3-for-5 with a run batted in and three runs scored, and Derner was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Arnold contributed a 3-for-4 effort with two runs scored, and Dorio posted a 2-for-3 day with one run scored.
William Paterson will celebrate Senior Day in the first game of a home-and-home series against Rutgers-Newark on Thursday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
