No. 30 Baseball Earns 6-1 Victory Behind O’Shea’s Complete Game

Pioneers Take First of Home-and-Home Series against Montclair State

Junior Tim O'Shea earned his sixth win of the year, tossing a complete game and allowing just one run.
BOX SCORE

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – William Paterson baseball (24-8, 7-4 NJAC) used a complete game by junior lefthander Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson) to earn a 6-1 baseball victory at Montclair State (20-11, 8-3 NJAC) in the first game of a home-and-home set at Yogi Berra Stadium April 19.

Junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) led off the game with a double to left-center, and came around to score on a Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) single through the middle to put the Pioneers in front, 1-0.  Senior shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) reached on an error by the Red Hawk defense and moved around the base paths by way of a stolen base, and a sacrifice bunt by junior third baseman James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep).  Dorio scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore outfielder A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange)

Designated hitter Kevin Bond scored the only run for the Red Hawks, blasting a home run over the left-field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Pioneers responded as senior first baseman Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) launched his first career home run to extend the WP lead, 3-1 in the eighth inning.

WP didn't let up, putting up three runs in the top of the ninth.  Lauer reached on an error to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on a hard-hit ground ball single to third by Flores.  Gibbons laced a double down the right-field line and advanced to third on the throw, allowing Lauer and Flores to cross home plate.  Ptaszynski lifted a fly ball to center that plated Gibbons to give the Pioneers a 6-1 final.  Montclair State threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but with bases loaded and two outs, O'Shea managed to avoid any damage by getting the last Red Hawk batter to fly out to left field and secure the win.

O'Shea improved to 6-1 on the year, throwing 9.0 innings allowing one earned run on six hits, striking out six batters.  Gibbons and Montanile were both 3-for-5 with two RBI, and senior outfielder Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) went 2-for-3.

Sean Hille took the loss for the Red Hawks allowing six runs (three earned) and struck out four.  Shortstop Cody Pace and left fielder Matt Moreno were both 2-for-4.

William Paterson will host Montclair State University for a NJAC match-up on Friday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m.
