WAYNE, N.J. –Sophomore second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) went 3-for-5 with four RBI as the No. 30 William Paterson baseball team (23-8, 6-4 NJAC) took a 10-5 victory against Centenary College (11-20, 6-9 CSAC) on April 17 at Jeff Albies Field.

Junior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) led off the Pioneer half of the first with a single and a stolen base.  Senior Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) singled to right field and advanced on an error by the Cyclones defense, which allowed Gibbons to score, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.

Centenary answered when a two-out walk was issued to senior Garrett Meagher, and he came around to score on a Dave Raifsnider double to left-center to knot the game at 1-1.

The Pioneers regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning, starting with Gibbons hit by pitch.  Ptaszynski singled to right field, followed by a fielder's choice by Derner that allowed Gibbons to cross the plate.

A one-out double by freshman third baseman Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) sparked a four-run fourth frame for WP.  Gibbons walked, and both runners were able to score on a Ptaszynski single to right field.  Derner blasted his 11th home run of the season to put the Pioneers in front, 6-1.

Meagher's leadoff single in the fifth helped the Cyclones tack on another run.  Meagher stole second, and advanced to third on a Raifsnider single through the left side.  Freshman infielder Joe Forcellini delivered a bases-loaded fielder's choice to cut the lead to 6-2.  Junior designated hitter Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) reached on a fielder's choice and moved up a base on an Arnold single to right field in the bottom of the frame.  Both runners were able to move on a wild pitch, and Ptaszynski's two-RBI single extended the Pioneer lead, 8-2.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, junior Ian Steepy singled down the right field line.  Meagher singled through the middle of the infield to advance Steepy to third.  Raifsnider singled to center field plating both runners to cut the lead in half, 8-4.

The Pioneers put up another run in the bottom of the seventh as Hansen led off the inning with a triple to right-center, and came around to score on an Arnold double that bounced down the left-field line.

Centenary would not let down, adding another run in the top of the eighth.  Freshman Ryan Caparoni tripled to right-center, and scored on a RBI ground out by Steepy.  WP would respond in the bottom of the inning when Hansen singled down the right-field line allowing sophomore Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) to score after he reached on a walk, giving the Pioneers a 10-5 win.

Freshman Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) improved to 5-0 on the season, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, fanning two.  Freshman Mitch D'Amato (Edison, N.J./Edison) threw 2.0 innings in relief, allowed one run on one hit, and sophomore Matt Serra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) closed the game, pitching 1.0 inning.

Seven pitchers saw the mound for Centenary, but the loss was charged to Kyle Bayse, who tossed 2.0 innings allowing one run on one hit, walking two.  Meagher went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Raifsnider was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
