MAHWAH, N.J. –The No. 23 William Paterson baseball team (21-7, 5-3 NJAC) dropped a 6-2 decision in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up at Ramapo College (18-7, 4-4 NJAC) on April 13.
The Roadrunners got on the board in the first inning as Christian Spurr launched a home run over the left-field fence to go in front, 1-0. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Anthony Vinci grounded a slow-roller to the pitcher that plated a run for Ramapo. A two-out single by Lee Rozins scored Joseph Somma, who singled to left field, to put the Roadrunners ahead 3-0 after six innings of play.
Ramapo added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth frame. Designated hitter Matt Hancock led off the inning with a single, and came around to score on a Somma single to left. After a bunt single loaded the bases, Rozins delivered a single to left field to plate freshman Chris Werr, who reached on a walk. A sacrifice fly by junior Dave Jacob scored sophomore pinch-runner John Capuano to take a 6-0 lead.
The Pioneers wouldn't go down without a fight, getting on the board in the top of the ninth. Junior
James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) led off with a single to right field, followed by a walk to junior outfielder
Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock). A single to right field by sophomore
A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) loaded the bases for WP. Senior
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) provided a RBI ground-out to score Lauer and get the Pioneers on the board. Senior designated hitter
Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to allow Gibbons to score for a final 6-2 score.
Junior
Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) suffered his first loss of the season throwing 7.0 innings, allowing six earned runs, striking out eight.
Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) tossed 1.0 inning in relief, allowing two hits.
Junior PJ Cerreto pitched 8.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Daniel LaRocca got the save, surrendering one hit to the three batters he faced. Somma was 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, while Hancock finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Senior
Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) was 2-for-4, and Montanile and Derner each recorded a RBI.
William Paterson will host The College of New Jersey for a double header on Saturday, April 14 at 11:30 a.m.
