WAYNE, N.J. –The No. 23 William Paterson baseball team (21-6, 5-2 NJAC) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to gain a one-run lead, but couldn't hang on falling to Ramapo (17-7, 3-4 NJAC), 8-7, on April 12 at Jeff Albies Field.

A three-run rally gave the Pioneers a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth.  Sophomore second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) led off the inning with a single down the right-field line, and senior Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) skipped a ball off the third base bag to reach safely.  Junior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  Sophomore A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) grounded a ball to first base, but the throw home was too late to catch Ptaszynski.  Senior first baseman Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) doubled down the right-field line to score Dorio and Gibbons to put the Pioneers ahead 7-6.

A two-run top of the ninth inning allowed Ramapo to defeat the Pioneers.  A double by freshman Chris Werr plated pinch runner Zach Carroll.  Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for pinch hitter Kevin Case, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Werr for the go-ahead run.

Three hits by Ramapo plated the first run of the day in the top of the first.  Singles by Marco Carolla, Christian Spurr, and Dan Moreno put the Roadrunners in front, 1-0.

The Pioneers led off the bottom of the second with an Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) hit by pitch.  Derner later scored on a Ptaszynski double to right-center to knot the score at 1-1.

Moreno led off the top of the Ramapo fifth with a double to right field.  Junior Matthew Hancock singled through the left side, and Werr walked to load the bases for the Roadrunners.  Junior Anthony Vinci singled to right field, plating two runs.  Lee Rozins singled, and an unusual double play scored two more runs to extend the lead to 6-1, but also ended the rally.  The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the frame, beginning with a leadoff single by Dorio.  Gibbons doubled to right-center, putting runners at second and third with one out.  Flores grounded a ball to third base, allowing Dorio to score.  Montanile singled in Gibbons to cut the lead in half, 6-3.

The Pioneers added another run in the bottom half of the sixth frame, sparked by a two-out single by Ptaszynski.  Dorio singled into the shortstop-third base hole, and Ptaszynski came around to score on a single that floated in-between the second baseman and right fielder by junior James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep).

Reliever J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) suffered the loss after throwing 0.1 inning, allowing two earned runs and one hit.  Junior James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) started for the Pioneers tossing 4.0 innings, allowing four earned runs.

PJ Cerreto collected the win for the Roadrunners throwing 1.1 relief innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two.  Travis Zilg was the starter for Ramapo tossing 7.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits, striking out five.  Werr went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Vinci was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Montanile finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, Ptaszynski was 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored and Dorio went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

William Paterson will visit Ramapo for a NJAC match-up on Friday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m.
