No. 23 Baseball Earns 5-1 Victory

Pioneers Defeat the College of Staten Island

Sophomore Mike Arecchi's two-RBI double helped lead the Pioneers to a 5-1 win at CSI.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. –The No. 23 William Paterson baseball team (21-5, 5-1 NJAC) earned a 5-1 victory at the College of Staten Island (13-14) on April 11. 

A two-out error by the Pioneer defense helped to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Will DiFede reached on an error, and moved to second and third on steals.  He was able to scamper home on a wild pitch that put the Dolphins ahead, 1-0.

Senior Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and classmate Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) were both hit by a pitch to put runners on with two outs for the Pioneers in the top of the sixth.  Junior James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) singled to left field, and Dorio was able to score on an error by the left fielder.  Senior outfielder Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) walked to load the bases for WP.  Scott Ptaszynski's (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) single up the middle plated Derner and Lauer.  Both runners were able to move up on a passed ball, and junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) drew a pinch-hit walk.  Sophomore catcher Mike Arecchi (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) doubled to left field, allowing two more runs to score for the Pioneers, putting them ahead, 5-1.

Freshman Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) picked up the victory tossing 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, and fanning four.  Senior Dan Alcala (Paterson, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) threw 3.0 relief innings, striking out two.

Daniel Slevin suffered the loss for the College of Staten Island throwing 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned), striking out three.  DiFede was 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Sal Todaro went 1-for-2.

Ptaszynski finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Arecchi went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

William Paterson will host Ramapo for a NJAC match-up on Thursday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m.
