GLASSBORO, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (14-5, 1-1 NJAC) took the night cap of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) double header, 6-1 at Rowan (15-5, 1-1 NJAC), April 1.  Rowan took game one, 9-8.

GAME ONE
The Pioneers put up two runs in the top of the ninth to even the score at 8-8, but surrendered a run in the bottom of the frame to take its first NJAC loss.

With two outs in the final inning of play, junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) was hit by a pitch, and sophomore A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) roped a single to third base to put a runner in scoring position for the Pioneers.  Senior Jack Montanile's (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) double to right-center plated both runners to knot the score at 8-8.  A two-out single by Nick Turano, followed by a wild pitch and a single by Sean Kelly scored the walk-off run for the Profs.

Three singles by the Rowan offense allowed the Profs to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.  The Pioneers responded in the top of the fourth on back-to-back singles by Montanile and senior Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional).  Junior catcher Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) drew the one-out walk, and senior Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Montanile to cross the plate and even the score.

Flores led off the top of the sixth with a walk and a stolen base, and was able to score on an overthrow by the Rowan catcher to put WP in front, 2-1.  A leadoff double by Somers in the seventh frame allowed freshman Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) to lay down the sacrifice bunt to move Somers to third.  He later scored on a single to right-center by senior shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), to stretch the Pioneer lead, 3-1.

Rowan responded in its half of the frame, starting with a one-out walk by Matt Hill.  Turano doubled to left field, and Kelly's two-RBI single evened the score at 3-3.

Flores and Montanile both singled, putting runners on the corners for William Paterson in the top of the eighth.  Derner's single to left field allowed Flores to scamper home.  Derner and Montanile both moved up a base on a wild pitch, and Somers' single to center allowed both runs to score to put the Pioneers ahead, 6-3.  Rowan scored five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Hill, which allowed the Profs to take an 8-6 lead.

The loss went to reliever Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley), after surrendering one run in 1.1 innings of work.  Sophomore Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) got the start for the Pioneers, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, striking out three.  Junior J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) struck out two, but allowed five runs in 1.0 inning.

Flores singled to center to start the sixth inning, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Montanile.  Derner doubled to center field to allow Flores to cross the plate, and put WP in front 2-1.

The Pioneers put up four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the win.  Montanile singled and circled to third on an error committed by the Profs' defense.  Derner was intentionally walked, and later advanced on a wild pitch that allowed Montanile to score.  Fondacaro singled, and junior James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for WP.  Sophomore second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) singled to center, allowing Derner and Fondacaro to score.  Somers plated Lauer on a sacrifice fly, to make the score 6-1.
