BOX SCORE

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The William Paterson baseball team (12-4) slugged 15 hits during a 15-12 victory at Manhattanville College (6-7), March 27.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead as junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) led off the game with a walk and stole second.  An error by the Valiant defense allowed A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) to reach safely, and push Gibbons to third.  Another error allowed Gibbons to score, and put senior Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) on base.  Flores scored on an Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) single through the right side.  Montanile scampered home on a Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) ground ball to the right side, putting the Pioneers in front 3-0.  Manhattanville responded in the bottom half of the frame on a Dan Fiorito home run.

A double down the left field line in the second by Derner allowed two runs to score, both unearned due to an error.  Fondacaro's single plated Montanile, who had previously reached on a walk.  Senior outfielder Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) doubled to center field, allowing Derner and Fondacaro to score, extending the lead 8-1.  A lead-off double by John Bucci helped the Valiant offense.  Bucci moved to third on a wild pitch, and he later scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnny LoVetere.

Scott Ptaszynski's (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) single through the right side led off the third inning for WP.  Flores' double to left field plated Ptaszynski.  Derner blasted his fifth home run on the year, collecting two RBI.  Back-to-back doubles by Fondacaro and Somers stretched the Pioneer lead 12-2.  Manhattanville answered in its half of the inning, putting up two runs on two hits.  Freshman Nick Euvino led off the inning, and advanced to second on an error by the Pioneer defense that allowed Fiorito on base.  Another error plated Euvino, and Fiorito scored on a LoVetere single through the right side to cut the lead, 12-4.

In the fourth inning, Raul Rodriguez reached on a throwing error, and advanced to second on the miscue.  A double by Euvino moved Rodriguez to second, and later scored on a wild pitch.  Euvino was pushed across on a Bucci single to right-center.  LoVetere reached on a Pioneer error that allowed Chris Nardozzi to score, making it a 12-7 contest.  The Valiants tacked on another run in the fifth, stringing together a walk and two singles.

The Pioneers put up three runs in the top of the seventh, started with a Somers hit-by-pitch and a walk drawn by Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont).  Senior Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) singled to center field, and advanced to second on an error, allowing Somers and Arnold to cross home plate.  Junior Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) reached on an error that allowed Dorio to come home, making the score 15-8.

Fiorito blasted his second home run of the game, which allowed three runs to score in the bottom of the eighth for Manhattanville.  Sophomore Ryan Blinderman singled through the right side, and later came around to score on a Pioneer error for a final 15-12 score.

The relief win went to Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) who threw 2.0 innings, striking out two and allowing two hits.  Freshman Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) got the start, tossing 4.0 innings allowing seven runs (three earned) and striking out three.  Mitch D'Amato (Edison, N.J./Edison) threw 1.0 inning surrendering one run, and Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) saw 1.0 inning of work, allowing three earned runs on four hits.
