WAYNE, N.J. – Senior
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) led the William Paterson offense, finishing the day 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored, as the Pioneers cruised past visiting Baruch (5-7) for a 14-4 baseball victory March 15.
The Pioneers strung together three hits, a walk and a Bearcat error to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning. A walk and three consecutive hits led to two more runs for WP in bottom of the second frame, giving the Pioneers a 6-0 lead.
The Bearcats put up three runs of their own in the top of the third when junior Steve Hession started the offense with a single through the left side. Alvin Mata followed with a walk, and both stole a base to put runners at second and third. Hession scored on a sac fly by Thomas Daly, and a double by Thommy DeJesus plated two runs, cutting the Pioneer lead in half.
Back-to-back walks led off the bottom of the third inning, followed by a Montanile triple that scored the two runners to extend the William Paterson lead to 8-3. An error, a double by
James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) and a single by senior shortstop
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) allowed three more runs to score, to give the Pioneers an 11-3 advantage.
Baruch led off the top of the fourth inning with a walk by Harold Fernandez, who made his way around the bases via a single and a stolen base. Mata's sacrifice fly allowed Fernandez to score, making it an 11-4 game.
William Paterson scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and six frames to extend the lead to a final 14-4 score.
Junior
Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) picked up the win in relief, tossing 1.1 innings, striking out two. Junior
Glenn Flora (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) got the start for the Pioneers, throwing 3.2 innings and surrendering four earned runs on seven hits, striking out three. Sophomore
Pete Savastano (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), freshman
Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills), and sophomore
Matt Serra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) all pitched 1.0 inning of scoreless relief for William Paterson.
Lauer went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Dorio was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Taveras finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Bearcats, and junior Alex Lopez (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on five hits.
William Paterson will travel to Arizona for its spring trip March 17-24 and will return to action at Jeff Albies Field on Wednesday, March 28, against John Jay at 3:30 p.m.
