Box Score
JERSEY CITY, N.J. – William Paterson (13-7-1, 3-1 NJAC) stormed out to a 6-1 lead en route to an 8-4 baseball victory at New Jersey City (4-17, 0-4 NJAC) April 8. The win allowed the Pioneers to sweep the season series against the Gothic Knights, thanks to a 4-3 home win April 7.
The Pioneers wasted no time, scoring twice during their first at-bat. An
A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) leadoff walk and an
Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) triple pushed across the first run, and designated hitter
Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) followed with a sacrifice fly.
Senior left fielder
Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) ignited a two-out rally with his fourth-inning triple. Catcher
Blake Crouch (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) doubled Moran in, and freshman
Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) made it a 4-0 score with his RBI-single to right-center field.
Ken Witte put a run up for NJCU with a solo shot during the home half of the fourth, but WP answered with two more scores in the fifth. Doughty hit a two-out single and picked up an extra base on an error by the left fielder. Junior outfielder
Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) drew a base on balls, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch before junior
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) ripped a double down the left-field line to clear the bases and hand William Paterson a 6-1 edge.
Jorge Guitierrez hit a bases-loaded sac fly to pull New Jersey City within four at 6-2 in the sixth. Each team struck once in the seventh, the Pioneers using a Montanile run-scoring single and the Gothic Knights taking advantage of an Andrew Rivera RBI-triple.
With the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, junior shortstop
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) walked to force across Crouch and make it an 8-3 game. NJCU finished the scoring with a single run during the bottom of the ninth, using a walk, double and groundout to first base.
Derner was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, RBI and run scored. Crouch finished 3-for-5, scored twice and contributed a run-batted-in. Montanile was 2-for-5, hit a double and drove in three runs, and Ptaszynski went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
