Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (16-7-1) earned its 13th victory in its last 14 games, cruising past visiting College of Staten Island (14-12) for an 11-0 victory April 13. Freshman third baseman A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, and sophomore lefty James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) tossed a complete game, surrendering just two hits to improve to 2-1.

The Pioneers got on top early as Flores doubled down the left-field line to be begin the bottom of the first. He scored on a ground ball to third by sophomore Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep), giving William Paterson a quick 1-0 advantage.

Junior Jack Montanile's (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) leadoff single sparked the Pioneer offense again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Marc Palestina (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) singled through the middle, plating Brian Truchan (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial), who came into the game for Montanile as a pinch runner. Freshman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) sent a base hit to left field, pushing Palestina to second, and Flores knocked in both runners with a two-out double to right center, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Pioneers.

Back-to-back singles by senior Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) and freshman catcher Mike Arecchi (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) and led off the sixth inning for William Paterson. After a sacrifice bunt by Palestina, Ptaszynski singled to center, allowing both runners to score and giving the Pioneers a 6-0 edge.

Pinch hitting for the Pioneers, freshman Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) found a gap in right-center field to give himself a stand-up double. A single to center field by junior outfielder Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) pushed Pasternak to third and gave the Pioneers another opportunity to score. Moran knocked a base hit into the second-base hole and plated Pasternak, putting the Pioneers up 7-0 after the seventh inning.

Singles by Ptaszynski and Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) added to the hit total for William Paterson in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pasternak walked to load the bases, bringing graduate student Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) to the plate, and he was hit by a pitch to score a run. Somers' sacrifice fly and an error on the play plated Doughty and Pasternak, and a double to right field by Truchan drove in Franco, giving the Pioneers a decisive 11-0 edge.

Ptaszynski was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Moran and Arecchi each contributed a pair of hits for the Pioneers.

The College of Staten Island starter Richard Anderson threw 6.0 innings, surrendering six runs on 11 hits and striking out three (3-2). Freshman Daniel Slevin pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing five runs (four earned).

The Pioneers will host Ramapo College Thursday, April 14. First pitch will be at 3:30 p.m.
