Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore outfielder Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and junior first baseman Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) each had three hits as William Paterson (10-6-1) rolled past John Jay (2-15) for a 15-0 victory March 31 at Jeff Albies Field. The game was halted in the middle of the seventh inning when a light rain began to mix with snow flurries.

The Pioneers scored twice during their first at-bat. Junior shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) doubled to right-center field and moved to third on a wild pitch. Derner walked before Hansen singled to center to score Dorio. Somers' single then loaded the bases for junior Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic), who hit a grounder to the pitcher that was enough to allow Derner to cross the plate.

William Paterson added three more runs in the second inning. Freshman second baseman Scott Ptaszynski's (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) one-out double and an error on a ball off the bat of Dorio put runners on the corners. Derner's grounder found a hole on the right side of the infield and drove in Ptaszynski, and Hansen tripled to the deepest part of center field to clear the bases and make it a 5-0 game.

Four third-inning runs produced a 9-0 score. Montanile drew a leadoff walk, junior Blake Crouch (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) singled through the left side and Ptaszynski walked to load the bases with one out. A Flores fielder's choice scored one run, Dorio doubled to drive in two runners, and Derner's triple plated the fourth run of the frame.

Somers started the fourth with a walk and promptly scored via a Montanile double. Junior Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) singled and Crouch was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ptaszynski and Flores hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to center field to make it a 12-0 score.

Derner deposited a single to center to get the WP offense started in the fifth. Somers was hit by a pitch, and after a groundout, Doughty walked. Crouch's bases-loaded double drove in all three runners, pushing the Pioneers ahead by a 15-0 count.

Derner was 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and three runs scored, while Hansen was 3-for-5 and contributed a triple and three runs-batted-in. Crouch finished 2-for-3, scored once and collected three RBI, and Dorio went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Junior Chris Mongelli (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) improved to 3-0, scattering five hits over 5.0 innings, striking out two Bloodhounds and walking three. Freshman Matt Serra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) pitched the final 2.0 innings and allowed a pair of hits.

Corry Harper and William Moran were both 2-for-3 for John Jay at the plate. Freshman Braylin Perez started on the mound and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits in 2.0 innings (1-4). Senior Wilmer Chavez gave up seven runs and five hits in 2.0 innings of work, and Harper surrendered four hits and three runs in 2.0 innings.

William Paterson will begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Saturday, April 2, hosting Rowan for a doubleheader to start at 11:30 a.m. at Jeff Albies Field.
