WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (8-6-1) cruised to 6-3 and 12-4 victories against Utica (0-7) in a seven-inning doubleheader March 27 at Jeff Albies Field.

GAME ONE
William Paterson scored in four of six innings to register an opening 6-3 victory.

William Paterson took the lead during its first at-bat, pushing across a pair of runners during the bottom of the first inning. Freshman third baseman A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) drew a four-pitch leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) then reached and advanced to second when the Utica shortstop's throw to first was high as Flores crossed the plate, and two hitters later Dorio trotted home on a Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) single to center field.

WP tacked on a single run when junior Blake Crouch (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) walked and eventually trotted home on a Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) second-inning base hit.

Utica got one run back during the top of the third thanks to three straight singles, the last a Terrence Reyes base hit to right that drove in Mike Rose from second base.

Junior first baseman Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) led off the home half of the third with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Hansen and scored via a Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) single to right-center for a 4-1 William Paterson edge.

Utica pulled within one during the top of the sixth inning. A pair of two-out walks were followed by an Alec Choleva RBI-single, and Chris Podlucky's base hit loaded the bases. Joe Sportman then laced a grounder back up the middle, driving in Adam Bittel from third to make it a 4-3 score, but William Paterson was able to stop the bleeding with a double play to end the inning.

William Paterson gave itself some breathing room with a two-run Flores single during the bottom of the sixth.

Ptaszynski was 2-for-2 with a RBI to lead WP at the plate. Senior Kevin Wieme (Bayville, N.J./Paramus) scattered five hits over 4.0 innings, striking out four to improve to 1-1. Freshman Eric Villegas (Newark, N.J./Elizabeth) gave up two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings, and junior Dan Alcala (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings and picked up his second career save.

Reyes, Choleva and Podlucky all went 2-for-3 for Utica. Chris Pallas started for Utica (0-2), allowing four runs (three earned) and four hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out three and walked five. Donato Traditi gave up a hit and run without registering an out, and Chris Jeffers pitched the final 1.0 inning and surrendered a hit and a run.

GAME TWO
Utica took the early lead, but William Paterson stormed back for six runs in the bottom of the first to earn the easy victory.

Back-to-back triples by Reyes and Nick Dunbar put Utica on the scoreboard, 1-0, in the top of the first inning. William Paterson quickly struck back in the bottom of the frame on a double by Derner that plated Dorio and Flores. The rally continued as a bunt single put Somers on the bag, and an error on the play advanced him to third and allowed Hansen and Derner to score. Freshman catcher Mike Arecchi (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) doubled down the left-field line, scoring Somers and Marc Palestina (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), who had previously reached on a walk, giving William Paterson a 6-1 lead.

A leadoff double to right center by Edward Adames sparked the offense for Utica in the top of the third. Senior Anthony DiSalvo reached on a fielding error by the left fielder, pushing Adames across the plate. DiSalvo later scored on a wild pitch, cutting the William Paterson lead to 6-3.

William Paterson got on the board again in the bottom of the third after a triple to left-center field by freshman Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) plated classmate Brian Truchan (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial), who had reached on a walk. Flores' sacrifice fly pushed Pasternak across the plate, giving William Paterson an 8-3 advantage.

Singles by Hansen and Palestina sparked a three-run inning for William Paterson in the bottom of the fourth. A double to right-center by Truchan plated Arecchi, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Pasternak's single to right-center allowed Truchan to score, giving William Paterson an 11-3 edge. William Paterson tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth as Hansen's fielder's choice scored Ptaszynski, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Utica used the top of the sixth to try and close the gap on William Paterson as Podlucky's single through the left side scored John Grogan, who had reached base after getting hit by a pitch, making it a 12-4 game.

Somers and Pasternak each had a pair of hits for William Paterson. Sophomore lefty James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) tossed 4.0 innings, surrendering one earned run and striking out three (1-1). Greg Baker (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson Regional) threw 1.0 hitless innings, striking out one. Freshman Ed Casiano (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) gave up one hit and one run in as many innings of work. Freshman Pete Savastano (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) closed the game for William Paterson, striking out two.

Choleva allowed eight runs in 3.0 innings of work as the starter for Utica (0-1). Junior Matt Zitt allowed three earned runs and four hits in 1.0 inning of work for Utica. Freshman Austin Williams surrendered an earned run and stuck out one in his single inning of work. Senior Sean Fisher tossed the sixth inning and struck out two.
