Box Score

MESA, ARIZ. – Junior Chris Mongelli (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) picked up his first victory in nearly three years as the William Paterson baseball team (2-4-1) earned a 5-1 win against Concordia, Wisc. (3-4) March 15 at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.

Mongelli pitched 6.0 strong innings, allowing one unearned run to earn a victory (1-0) for the first time since the 2008 season. Out of the lineup the last two years due to injury, he scattered five Falcon hits and walked three while registering one strikeout.

Mongelli got some support right away, as the Pioneers crossed the plate three times during the bottom of the first. Three straight singles, the last off the bat of junior Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic), allowed A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) to score. Two batters later, freshman Ken O'Donnell (Teaneck, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) drove in Doughty with a groundout.

Concordia got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fourth, but junior Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) tripled and scored via an error, making it a 4-1 score after four. The Pioneers added one last run during the home half of the fifth after a Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) leadoff walk, sacrifice and Derner RBI-single.

Doughty, Derner and Flores each contributed a pair of hits for William Paterson. Junior Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) earned his first save of the season, throwing 3.0 innings of scoreless relief.

William Paterson will face Central Wednesday, March 16, at 1:30 p.m. at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
