WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (16-16-1, 6-8 NJAC) fought back to get a split in a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden (17-15, 6-8 NJAC) April 24. The Scarlet Raptors took the first game, 11-4, while the Pioneers took the second, 4-2. Both William Paterson and Rutgers-Camden began the day in a four-way tie for the sixth and final berth for the NJAC Tournament, set to begin May 4.

With a double during the night cap, senior Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) took over sole possession of the career doubles mark with 53, surpassing the previous top career mark of 52, established by Bryan Graham (2000-03).

GAME ONE
The Scarlet Raptors scored early and often, jumping out to a 4-0 first-inning edge en route to an 11-4 opening victory. Sophomore Andrew Hoffman threw 8.0 innings, striking out four and walking one while allowing four runs (three earned) on 12 hits to improve to 4-3.

A Greg Hunt groundout plated Kyle Ballay, followed by a John Hydock RBI-single and a two-run Scott Fruits triple, for the early 4-0 score. Fruits and Tom Clarke each contributed a run-scoring base hit during the top of the third, and Matt Hunt's two-run homer to right made it an 8-0 score in the fourth.

William Paterson got on the scoreboard during the home half of the fourth with a drive by junior Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) that was just inside the left foul pole, his fifth home run of the year.

Rutgers-Camden tacked on three more in the fifth, including a Clarke RBI-triple to left-center field, before Guadango singled in Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) for an 11-2 score after five innings.

Back-to-back doubles by junior Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) and sophomore Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic), followed by a single back up the middle from Jonattan Fernandez (Paterson, N.J./Sports Business Academy), added two scores for the Pioneers in the sixth.

Matt Hunt finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored for the Raptors. Hydock was 4-for-4 and scored twice, and Fruits and Clarke each produced three hits. Junior John Diamond pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Montanile was one of four Pioneers with two hits. Sophomore Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) fell to 1-2 after giving up 11 runs (10 earned) in 4.0 innings. Freshman James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) surrendered five hits and one run in 4.0 innings, and sophomore Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) gave up two ninth-inning hits.

GAME TWO
Freshman Jacob Baron (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) tossed the complete-game victory in his second career start, improving to 5-0 this season with a 4-2 win.

After three scoreless innings to start the contest, Rutgers-Camden broke through for a single run in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a Clarke base hit flared into shallow left field to plate Steve Myers from second base.

After Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) drew a sixth-inning leadoff walk, Guadango doubled to break the record and tie the score, making it a 1-1 contest. Franco then stepped to the plate and drilled his second home run of the day, this one to left-center, for a 3-1 WP lead. The Pioneers then made it 4-1 in the seventh when Guadango singled in Lugo with a grounder through the left side of the infield.

Two hits and a wild pitch set the stage for a Clarke sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth, but 4-2 was as close as the Scarlet Raptors could get as a lineout and foul popup ended the threat.

Baron scattered 10 hits over 9.0 innings, striking out two and walking three. Montanile finished 3-for-4, while Guadango went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Clarke was 2-for-3 with two RBI, one of five Rutgers-Camden players to collect a pair of hits. Senior Cory Downham gave up four runs and seven hits in 6.2 innings (5-3). Diamond allowed two hits during the final 1.1 innings.

William Paterson will host Keystone Wednesday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m.
