Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior all-American outfielder Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) became the Pioneers' all-time hits leader as William Paterson (9-6-1) defeated Utica (2-7), 11-6, March 28.

Guadango, who began the day tied with Paul Bumbaco (1993-96) for the top spot with 226 hits, took over sole possession of first place with a two-run, fifth-inning home run. He finished the day 1-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

All eight Pioneer position players contributed as William Paterson scored runs during six of its eight at-bats. Utica started the scoring in the top of the third when Jeremy Clark successfully put down the bunt and Nick Dunbar scampered home on the squeeze play, but back-to-back RBI-doubles by senior Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) and sophomore Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) made it a 2-1 William Paterson advantage during the bottom half of the inning.

Kevin Oquendo drove in two runs with a double to left-center and Allen Williams later sent Oquendo home with a base hit, making it a 4-2 Utica advantage during the top of the fourth. William Paterson once again had an immediate response, this time thanks to a Joe Fiorino (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) run-scoring single and an Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) sacrifice fly, for a 4-4 tie.

Utica scored once in the fifth after a walk, two wild pitches and a groundout, but William Paterson went ahead in the home half of the inning after Guadango's two-run homer down the left-field line, making it a 6-5 contest.

A bases-loaded Utica walk tied the game, 6-6, but William Paterson went ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two coming via a Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) double. William Paterson added one run after a Somers RBI-double in the seventh, and one more thanks to a James Gregory (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) sac fly during the bottom of the eighth.

Gregory was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored, sophomore Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) went 3-for-5 and hit two doubles, and Lugo was 3-for-5 with a double. Somers, Franco, Fiorino and Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) each added a pair of hits.

Sophomore Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits. Freshman James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) surrendered one unearned run and one hit in 1.0 inning, and classmate Greg Baker (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson Regional) picked up the win (1-0) with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, scattering two hits and striking out four while walking one.

Adam Bittel was 3-for-5 with a double to lead Utica. Dunbar went 2-for-3 and scored twice, and Williams was 2-for-2 and stole two bases. Brendan Brady gave up 11 hits and six runs in 4.2 innings on the mound. Robert Amor (0-1) surrendered five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Pioneers will host Union Tuesday, March 30, at 3:30 p.m.
