KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (6-4) completed play at the Rebel Spring Games with a 10-8 loss to Springfield and a 2-1 win against No. 20 Illinois Wesleyan March 19.

GAME ONE
After rallying to tie the score at 7-7, three runs surrendered in the bottom of the fourth inning led to a 10-8 Pioneer defeat at the hands of Springfield.

William Paterson crossed the plate twice in the top of the first, using a Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) single, a Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) hit by pitch, a sacrifice, a Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) RBI-single and an error by the catcher. Springfield strung together three hits to get a run back during the home half of the inning, but the Pioneers answered with a Zippler three-run homer to take a 5-1 lead in the middle of the second.

Springfield surged ahead with six runs scored during the bottom of the second inning to seize a 7-5 advantage, but junior Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) plated Vitale with a sacrifice fly and senior Lacey Santone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) drove in Samantha Koenig (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) with a double, knotting the score at 7-7 in the third.

Back-to-back Springfield home runs made it a 10-7 score in the fourth, and Jimmerson plated the final run with a fifth-inning double.

Santone was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Zippler went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, and Vitale was 2-for-4 at the plate while pitching the first 1.0 inning and allowing five runs on six hits. Freshman Jaclyn Masterson (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) tossed 1.0 inning, giving up two hits and two runs. Sophomore Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) threw the final 4.0 innings and surrendered three runs on six hits, striking out six (2-4).

GAME TWO
Sophomore Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) scored the first run and drove in the second as William Paterson scored a 2-1 upset victory against Illinois Wesleyan.

Roder drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a Zippler sacrifice and trotted to third after a passed ball before scoring on a Lindsey Nadolny (Belford N.J./Middletown North) single during the bottom of the first inning. The Pioneers added another run in the fifth when junior Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) singled, stole second and scored after a Roder base hit to left field. Illinois Wesleyan crossed the plate once in the top of the sixth, but could not force across the tying run.

Mulderig accounted for two of the Pioneers' four hits. Graham pitched the complete game (3-4), striking out eight hitters while scattering six hits.

The Pioneers will return to action Wednesday, March 24, playing a doubleheader at Manhattanville at 3:00 p.m.
