KISSIMMEE, FLA. – No. 19 William Paterson (3-1) earned a pair of wins March 14 at the Rebel Spring Games, defeating Simpson, 3-2 in eight innings, and McDaniel, 13-4 in six innings.
GAME ONE
Two Pioneer runs in the top of the eighth inning allowed William Paterson to get past Simpson in WP's first game of the day.
A first-inning sacrifice fly allowed Simpson to take an early 1-0 lead, but a
Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) triple scored sophomore
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) from first base, knotting the score at 1-1 after five.
Roder was placed at second base under the international tiebreaker rules to start the eighth inning, was sacrificed to third by Zippler and scored thanks to a
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford N.J./Middletown North) RBI-single. Junior
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) followed with a base hit, and freshman
Nicole Walls (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) later drove in Nadolny with a single down the right-field line, handing William Paterson a 3-1 lead. Simpson got a run back with a RBI-single during the home half of the inning, but a final pop-up ended the game.
Nadolny and Vitale were both 2-for-4 at the plate. Junior
Morgan Bell (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) tossed the first 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run. Sophomore
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) earned the victory in relief (1-1), scattering six hits over 5.0 innings and giving up one unearned run.
GAME TWO
William Paterson used 10 hits to earn a 13-3, six-inning victory against McDaniel in the night cap.
The Pioneers were ahead 6-0 after their first two at-bats, including a two-run single by Roder, before tacking on another pair of scores in the bottom of the third behind RBI-singles from junior
Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and Roder.
Vitale scored on a passed ball in the fourth, and four more runners touched home plate in the sixth inning, the last two after a Mulderig base hit.
Roder was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Vitale went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, and Mulderig was 2-for-4 while driving in three runs. Freshman
Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) started inside the circle, allowing eight hits and three runs (one earned) for her first career victory (1-0). Classmate
Jaclyn Masterson (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) tossed the final 1.0 inning, issuing a walk.
The Pioneers will face Endicott (9:00 a.m.) and Fontbonne (11:00 a.m.) Tuesday, March 16, at the Rebel Spring Games.
