Baseball Defeats Babson, 3-2

Three-Run Fifth Inning Lifts Pioneers to Victory

Senior Marc Palestina was 3-for-4 during a 3-2 win against Babson.

VERO BEACH, FLA. – William Paterson (4-1-1) continued play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 3-2 victory against Babson March 14 at Dodgertown Stadium.

Babson broke the ice with a single run in the bottom of the second, but the Pioneers crossed the plate three times in the top of the fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish. Senior Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) knocked in freshman Mike Linskey (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) with a single, and sophomore Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) trotted home after the hit and an error, making it a 2-0 score. Senior Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) later plated Lugo with a sacrifice fly.

Babson added a single run with a sac fly of its own during the home half of the seventh inning. Senior Marc Palestina (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, and Lugo was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Sophomore starter J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) tossed the first 1.1 innings (four hits, one run), and freshman James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) earned his first win (1-0) with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. Classmate Jacob Baron (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) picked up his first save by pitching the final 3.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits.

The Pioneers will play a doubleheader against Greenville Monday, March 15, at 9:30 a.m. at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
