NEW YORK, N.Y. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (8-2) opened up a 32-point halftime lead en route to an easy 77-43 victory at Hunter (3-7) Dec. 29.

The Pioneers shot 45.5 (20-44) percent from the field while limiting the Hawks to a 6-for-24 (.250) effort and forcing 15 turnovers to build a 52-20 advantage after 20 minutes of play. Junior forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) had 11 points and seven rebounds during the opening stanza, while freshman forward Jewell Palmer (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) had nine tallies and nine boards.

William Paterson's lead ballooned to as many as 35 (67-32, 9:03) midway through the second half. Smith finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Palmer collected 13 tallies and 12 boards, and sophomore guard Lindsey Callander (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) posted 15 points. Sophomore forward Tatiana Javis (Newark, N.J./ Bloomfield Tech) added 10 tallies and seven caroms.

Shamar Stewartson led Hunter with 14 points, and Nicole Lenard added 11 tallies.

William Paterson will take on Frostburg State in the first round of the Starters/Moravian Classic Sunday, Jan. 2, at 1:00 p.m.
