MVP Lucas Leads William Paterson to DeSales Tournament Title

Pioneers Defeat Ursinus, 61-44, Behind Junior Guard's 22 Points

Junior BriAnna Lucas was named the DeSales Tournament MVP after scoring a total of 36 points in a pair of wins.

CENTER VALLEY, PA. – Tournament MVP BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) scored 16 of her game-high 22 points during the second half to lead the William Paterson women's basketball team (3-0) to a 61-44 victory against Ursinus (2-1) in the championship game of DeSales' Starters Pub Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 21.

Lucas added two assists, a steal and a block to her 22 tallies after posting 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals during a first-round win against Scranton Nov. 20.  Junior forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) joined Lucas on the All-Tournament Team with five points, five rebounds and three steals against the Bears. She had contributed 25 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots the night before against the Royals.

Sophomore guard Allyson Scerbo (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) came off the bench to score 13 points in 25 minutes against Ursinus. Classmate Lindsey Callander (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) added 10 tallies, and freshman forward Dana Jeter (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) posted team bests of 12 rebounds and five assists.

William Paterson was ahead by just one at 29-28 at halftime, but the Pioneers scored the first 12 points of the second half to seize control, 41-28, with 13:32 to play. WP shot 42.9 (12-28) percent after the break, while holding Ursinus to a 5-for-31 (.161) effort during the final 20 minutes.

Lindsay Teuber paced the Bears with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

William Paterson will play at York (N.Y.) Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 6:00 p.m.
