Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Jodi Feriod's (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) goal 3:42 into the extra session allowed the No. 20 William Paterson field hockey team (1-0) to begin its season with a 3-2 overtime victory against visiting Muhlenberg (0-1) Sept. 1 at Wightman Stadium.

Senior Christina Ayusa (Runnemede, N.J./Triton) got the Pioneers on the board in the 24th minute, hitting s shot that squirted past Muhlenberg goalie Kristen Dornenburg and into the cage. However, the Mules tied the score four minutes later when senior Tara Cohn converted a broken corner play by blasting a shot from the top of the circle off a pass from freshman Jaclyn Todisco.

Muhlenberg took its first lead of the game in the 52nd minute when Cohn scored her second goal of the night, this one an unassisted strike from the top of the circle. With time dwindling down, William Paterson found a way to knot the score as junior Amanda Sheehan (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) tipped in a long drive by classmate Jennie Hara (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) during a penalty corner, making it a 2-2 game with 3:00 remaining in regulation.

Feriod secured the victory when her shot across the mouth of the goal was tipped in by a diving Muhlenberg defender, a game-winning goal that was assisted by Hara.

William Paterson all-American goalie Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) turned away nine shots, and the defensive effort was helped by first-half defensive saves off the sticks of Hara and Mary O'Connor (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey). Dornenburg made three saves for the Mules.

William Paterson will return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Pioneers host RPI at 6:00 p.m.
