WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (15-3, 4-2 NJAC) battled back from a 12-0 game-one defeat to earn a 5-3 victory during the second game of a softball doubleheader against No. 20 Ramapo (14-4, 2-4 NJAC) April 5.
GAME ONE
Ramapo threatened during each of its first three at-bats, but finally broke through with nine runs during the top of the fourth inning en route to a 12-0, five-inning win.
The Roadrunners started the fourth with seven straight hits, including RBI-doubles by senior Kelly Schriber and sophomore Stephanie Malgeri. In all, Ramapo had nine hits during the inning, building a 9-0 lead.
Junior Jen Vitorino drove in two runs with her fifth-inning triple to right-center field, and she later scored thanks to a Danielle Rothenberger double, for the 12-0 score.
Rothenberger was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Ramapo. Sophomore Rachel Wong also was 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in a run.
Senior
Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) was 2-for-2 for the Pioneers, and junior
Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) and sophomore
Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) accounted for William Paterson's other two hits.
Sophomore Deanna Giordano improved to 8-1 after throwing the complete game and striking out three hitters while allowing four hits. Sophomore
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) took the loss for WP (4-1), giving up nine hits and five runs in 3.0 innings of work.
GAME TWO
Zippler hit her second career home run, and first of the season, to help William Paterson win the night cap by a 5-3 score.
Senior
Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) singled and stole second to get things started during the top of the first inning, and she crossed home plate after a Vitale double to left field. Sophomore
Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) then singled up the middle, and Zippler stepped up and drilled a ball down the left-field line and over the fence, handing William Paterson a 4-0 advantage.
The Pioneers tacked on another run in the top of the third after three straight singles, the last an
Ashlie Gaynor (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) base hit to right-center that drove in Zippler.
Marilee Farmer and Rothenberger hit back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the fourth, and a Malgeri groundout plated one run for a 5-1 score. Ramapo added two more during the fifth inning with a Farmer RBI-single and a Rothenberger run-scoring fielder's choice, cutting WP's lead to 5-3.
Zippler was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) went 2-for-4 and stole two bases for William Paterson.
Seven different players had hits for Ramapo, including four individuals with two-hit efforts.
Freshman
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) earned the victory (6-2), scattering 11 hits while allowing three runs in 7.0 innings. Sophomore Lyndsay Buehler dropped to 6-3 for the Roadrunners after giving up five runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings inside the circle.
William Paterson will host Kean Tuesday, April 7, for a doubleheader to begin at 3:00 p.m.
