NEWARK, N.J. – The No. 24 William Paterson softball team (27-5, 12-4 NJAC) ran its winning streak to six games with a pair of five-inning victories at Rutgers-Newark (5-29, 0-16 NJAC), 18-2 and 8-0, in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action April 23.

The Pioneers, who have two league games yet to play, are currently second in the NJAC standings with a 12-4 mark, trailing No. 16 Rowan (13-1) and leading Ramapo (9-5) and The College of New Jersey (9-5). William Paterson, already assured a berth in next week's NJAC Tournament, will finish conference play with a doubleheader at Rowan Saturday, April 25, at 1:00 p.m.

GAME ONE
The Pioneers blasted four home runs during the game's first two innings to explode for an 18-2, five-inning win.

Junior Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) and sophomore Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) hit back-to-back round-trippers to help build a 4-0 first-inning lead. During the second frame, senior Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) drilled a two-run homer and Zippler hit her second home run of the day, this one a solo shot, for a 7-0 score.

The Pioneers hung six runs on the scoreboard during the third inning, as sophomore Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) drove in two runs with a single up the middle, classmate Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) doubled in two more scores, sophomore Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) hit a RBI-single and junior Lacey Santone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) plated the last run with a double to right-center.

A Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) run-scoring fielder's choice handed WP a 14-1 fourth-inning edge, and the Pioneers finished the game by crossing the plate four times in the fifth, two of those runners trotting home thanks to a Roder double.

Santone was 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Zippler hit a pair of home runs and tallied three RBI and three runs scored as part of a 2-for-3 day. Nadolny, Vitale, Mulderig and Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Freshman Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) started inside the circle and allowed two hits in 2.0 innings of work (11-3). Vitale threw the final 3.0 innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits.

GAME TWO
Eight of the Pioneers' nine starters each had a hit as William Paterson finished the day with an 8-0, five-inning victory.

William Paterson used two singles, a pair of errors, two walks and a pair of wild pitches to push across three runs during the bottom of the first.

Mulderig led off the second with a single, advanced to second on an error and then used two wild pitches to score, the start of a four-run outburst during the frame. Zippler and Santone each drove in runs with singles, and a Mendez triple, the Pioneers' only extra-base hit of the game, handed WP a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers tacked on a final run during the bottom of the third for the 8-0 final score.

Vitale started and pitched 3.0 innings, striking out four and giving up one hit (7-2). Sophomore Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) allowed a hit and registered four strikeouts in 2.0 innings of relief.
