WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (23-5) allowed a total of two hits, one during each of the two games, in a 16-1 and 3-0 sweep of John Jay (9-14) in non-conference action at Pioneer Softball Field April 16.

GAME ONE
The Pioneers pounded out 13 hits, including three for extra bases, for a 16-1, five-inning victory during the day's opening game.

William Paterson crossed the plate four times during the first inning, six times in the second and six more times during the bottom of the fourth. During the Pioneers' first at-bat, sophomore second baseman Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) drove in senior Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and junior Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) with a single through the right side of the infield, sophomore Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) doubled in Nadolny, and Vitale later trotted home after a fielding error by the Bloodhound shortstop, giving WP a 4-0 edge.

Vitale plated two more runs with her second double of the day, this one down the left-field line, for a 6-0 second-inning lead. Senior Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) scored Vitale with a base hit through the left side of the infield, sophomore Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) knocked in Abourashed with a single to center, junior Lacey Santone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) ran home on a bases-loaded error by the John Jay shortstop, and Mulderig crossed the plate after a wild pitch, making it a 10-0 score.

John Jay scored its lone run of the day in the top of the fourth, when leadoff hitter Nelly Vega reached first after a Pioneer error, moved to second on a Danielle Bonici fielder's choice, advanced to third thanks to Kim Bifulco's single, and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Junior Linda Hahn (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) hit a two-run single up the middle, classmate Casey Sierra (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) scored another runner with a base hit to left field, and Nadolny hit her third home run of the year, a three-run bomb to right field, all during the fourth frame.

Nadolny finished 2-for-4 with a home run, five RBI and three runs scored. Vitale was 2-for-4 at the plate, hitting two doubles and driving in three runs while scoring twice herself, and she improved to 6-2 inside the circle, allowing an unearned run on one hit, walking one and striking out four Bloodhounds.

Bifulco accounted for John Jay's lone hit of the game. Sophomore Angela Lam took the loss (4-7), allowing 16 runs (12 earned) on 13 hits in 3.1 innings.

GAME TWO
Sophomore Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) held John Jay hitless during the day's second game until the top of the fifth, when Sarah Balgobin hit a soft single into shallow center field. Mascarelli finished with the complete-game victory (6-0), striking out 13 batters while walking three in the 3-0 win.

With one out in the bottom of the first, Zippler reached base after hitting a hard grounder through the left side of the infield, and Nadolny promptly sent her home with a double to center, handing the Pioneers an early 1-0 advantage.

William Paterson tacked on two more runs in the third, as freshman Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) singled and Zippler walked, setting the stage for a Vitale RBI-single to make it a 2-0 game with runners at the corners. The Pioneers then pulled off the double steal, as Vitale drew a throw to second and forced a rundown, giving Zippler enough time to score from third.

Vitale and Santone were each 2-for-2 with a double to lead the Pioneers at the plate.

Sophomore Nina Chao surrendered seven hits and three runs in 6.0 innings for the loss (1-7).

William Paterson will host Rutgers-Camden for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 18, at 1:00 p.m.
