POMONA, N.J. – In a battle of two of the top teams in the current New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball standings, William Paterson (14-2, 3-1 NJAC) and Richard Stockton (14-4, 3-1 NJAC) split a doubleheader March 31. The visiting Pioneers won the first game, 2-1, and the host Ospreys earned a 4-3 victory during the night cap.
GAME ONE
Sophomore designated player
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) drove in both of the Pioneers' runs in a close 2-1 victory.
William Paterson struck first with a run during the third inning. Senior
Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) singled to lead off, and advanced to second thanks to a
Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) sacrifice. Sophomores
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) and
Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) then drew walks, loading the bases for Vitale, who also was issued a free pass to allow Reilly to trot home and give WP the 1-0 edge.
Richard Stockton tied the game with a run in the fourth after a single, groundout, passed ball and another base hit. During their very next at-bat, the Pioneers re-took the lead, crossing the plate once during the top of the fifth. Nadolny led off with a single, followed by a Mendez double to put runners on second and third. Vitale then plated Nadolny thanks to a fielder's choice.
Nadolny was 2-for-2 with a stolen base, while Reilly, Mendez and sophomore
Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) accounted for William Paterson's other three hits. Sophomore
Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed three hits and one run to improve to 3-0. Freshman
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) picked up her first career save with 2.2 innings of shutout ball, striking out a pair of Ospreys.
GAME TWO
William Paterson saw its eight-game win streak snapped with a 4-3 loss during the day's second game.
Richard Stockton never trailed in the contest after scoring two runs during the top of the first. William Paterson got one of those runs back during the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a leadoff single by Reilly, a bunt single by freshman
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), a Nadolny sacrifice and a passed ball, making it a 2-1 score.
The Ospreys tacked on another run in the fourth before the Pioneers pushed across a runner in the fifth when Vitale singled in pinch runner
Danielle DeDomenico (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West).
A sacrifice fly gave Richard Stockton a 4-2 sixth-inning edge, and William Paterson finished the scoring during the bottom half of the same inning when a Nadolny single, followed by two Osprey errors, allowed her to cross the plate.
Reilly, Roder, Nadolny and Vitale each had singles for the Pioneers. Graham pitched the complete game but suffered the loss (5-2), allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) while registering eight strikeouts.
William Paterson will host No. 17 Ramapo Saturday, April 4, for a doubleheader to begin at 1:00 p.m.
