SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-6) finished its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader split against Augsburg (4-6-1) at the Greater Phoenix Invitational March 20. The Pioneers lost the first game, 8-4, before winning the night cap, 15-6.

GAME ONE
William Paterson pulled to within a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Augsburg scored three times during the top of the seventh to ice an 8-4 victory.

The Auggies scored a pair of unearned runs during the second inning, but a J.D. Melendez (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) single through the left side of the infield plated senior center fielder John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) for a 2-1 score.

A two-run homer pushed Augsburg ahead 4-1 in the third, and a walk, sacrifice fly, groundout and passed ball gave the Auggies a 5-1 lead in the fourth.

Elia led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run to right field, and a Vin Ganz (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) RBI-single and a Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) bases-loaded walk pulled the Pioneers to within one at 5-4.

Augsburg finished the scoring a RBI-double, sacrifice fly and run-scoring single during the top of the seventh.

Six different players accounted for William Paterson's six hits. Freshman Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) took the loss (1-1) after allowing four hits and five runs (three earned) in 5.0 innings. Classmate J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) pitched the final 2.0 innings and surrendered four hits and three earned runs.

GAME TWO
Junior designated hitter Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of runs scored to lead the Pioneers in a 15-6 win.

Augsburg owned a 5-1 lead after three innings, but the Pioneers scored three times in each of the next three frames to earn the victory. A Don Hays (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) sacrifice fly, Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) run-scoring single and Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) RBI-double made it a 5-4 game in the fourth, and Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) drove in a run with a single through the right side and two Pioneers scored on a two-out error, giving William Paterson a 7-5 lead in the fifth.

Courter plated two runs with a single through the right side of the infield, and he later trotted home thanks to an error by the Auggie third baseman, to jump ahead 10-5 during the sixth inning. William Paterson pushed five more runs across on five hits in the top of the seventh, including a solo homer off the bat of Elia.

Courter, Elia, Moran, Montanile and Lugo each had two hits for William Paterson. Junior Scott Zirul (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) picked up the win (2-1) with 7.0 innings of relief, striking out three and giving up three unearned runs and seven hits.

The Pioneers will return home to take on Manhattanville Tuesday, March 24, at 3:30 p.m.
