OSCEOLA, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (9-1) finished play at the Rebel Spring Games with a 7-3 win against Smith (3-4) and a 5-4 victory against Utica (2-5) March 19.

GAME ONE
Tied at 3-3 after three innings, the Pioneers crossed the plate during three of the last four innings for a 7-3 victory against Smith.

Sophomore right fielder Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led off the top of the third with a triple, and promptly ran home thanks to a Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) double down the left-field line. Junior center fielder Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) plated Reilly with a double, and two batters later, Jenna Vitale's (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) single scored Zippler, staking the Pioneers to a 3-0 edge.

Smith answered with three runs of its own, all unearned, during the home half of the inning to tie the score. A Lacey Santone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) double, Mulderig sacrifice and Reilly single pushed the Pioneers back ahead, 4-3 in the fourth, and during their next at-bat the Pioneers' Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) drove in pinch runner Rebecca McClure (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) for a 5-3 score.

Jimmerson's double plated Vitale and Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) during the top of the seventh inning to finish the game's scoring.

Mendez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, Jimmerson was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Reilly was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs-batted-in. Junior Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) improved to 2-0 with 6.0 innings of three-hit ball, giving up three unearned runs and three walks while striking out four hitters. Sophomore Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) threw a perfect seventh inning in relief.

GAME TWO
Reilly and sophomore Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) each had three hits in a 5-4 victory against Utica.

Utica took the early lead thanks to a three-run triple in the top of the second, but William Paterson fought back to score five times during the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Reilly singled to left field to score Santone, the start of a string of four straight singles that produced a two-run lead for the Pioneers.

Utica tacked on a final run during the fourth inning with two walks, a single and a fielder's choice.

Nadolny added a RBI and stolen base to her 3-for-3 effort, while Reilly was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. Zippler and sophomore Ashlie Gaynor (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) each contributed a pair of hits.

Sophomore Ashley McDonald (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) started and pitched the first 3.0 innings, surrendering three hits and four runs. Mascarelli earned the victory (2-0) with 4.0 innings of scoreless relief, scattering two hits and walking three batters.

William Paterson will play its home opener Wednesday, March 25, hosting Manhattanville in a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
