OSCEOLA, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (7-1) bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Carthage (2-3) to defeat Trinity (4-3) 9-0 in five innings March 18 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
GAME ONE
William Paterson jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Carthage, but three solo home runs lifted the Lady Reds to a 3-2 victory and handed the Pioneers their first loss of the season.
Senior third baseman
Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) led off the top of the first with a double, followed by a
Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) bunt single and a
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) walk to load the bases. Sophomore
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) then singled up the middle, plating Reilly and Zippler to stake the Pioneers to the early lead.
Carthage hit two solo homers during the third inning and another during the fourth.
Reilly, Zippler and Nadolny accounted for the Pioneers' three hits. Freshman starter
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) took the loss (2-1), allowing all three runs and five hits during 3.0 innings of work and striking out five batters without issuing a walk. Sophomore
Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) threw the final 3.0 innings and gave up two hits and one walk while compiling four strikeouts.
GAME TWO
Reilly went 3-for-3 at the plate and Vitale threw a complete-game two-hitter in a 9-0 victory against Trinity.
The Pioneers struck immediately with three runs in the first inning, including a Zippler RBI-single and a run-scoring double off the bat of sophomore catcher
Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech). Reilly doubled in freshman
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) for a 4-0 score an inning later, and William Paterson plated five more runs during the fourth. With runners on the corners and one out, Zippler's grounder to second base drove in senior
Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), followed by a Nadolny RBI-double, back-to-back run-scoring singles from Vitale and Jimmerson, and a two-run double to center field by
Linda Hahn (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic).
Hahn was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Jimmerson also registered a pair of hits. Vitale (3-0) struck out three and walked one inside the circle.
William Paterson will finish play at the Rebel Spring Games Thursday, March 19, facing Smith at 11:00 a.m. and Utica at 3:00 p.m.
