KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (4-0) continued its season-opening winning streak, defeating Wisconsin-River Falls (2-4) 11-2 in five innings and Nichols (0-2) 2-1 in eight innings, at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., March 15.
GAME ONE
Junior
Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) and sophomore
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) each had two hits and junior
Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) threw the complete game in a five-inning, 11-2 win against Wisconsin-River Falls.
A Nadolny single and a
Lacey Santone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) bases-loaded walk gave the Pioneers an early 2-0 edge, but River Falls answered with two runs of its own during the bottom of the first inning. William Paterson then exploded for four runs in the second, thanks to back-to-back hits by Zippler and sophomore
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley), and later a two-run triple off the bat of sophomore
Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech).
With the bases loaded and no one out in the fourth,
Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) singled up the middle to score Jimmerson, followed by a walk drawn by
Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) to plate Santone. Zippler's single to left scored pinch runner
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), Vitale's walk forced Mulderig across the plate, and another bases-loaded walk gave Jimmerson her third RBI of the day and finished the scoring.
Zippler and Vitale each drove in two runs, while Ballard (1-0) allowed six hits and two earned runs, striking out three hitters and walking one.
GAME TWO
Sophomore
Ashlie Gaynor's (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) eighth-inning single scored Vitale and gave the Pioneers a 2-1 victory against Nichols.
A RBI-single gave Nichols a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, but the Pioneers answered in the bottom of the sixth when Vitale doubled and was lifted for pinch runner
Rebecca McClure (New Milford, N.J./New Milford), Nadolny singled and Gaynor's fielder's choice allowed McClure to cross home plate. During the bottom of the eighth, Vitale was placed at second base as part of the tiebreaking procedure, moved to third thanks to a Nadolny sacrifice and scored on Gaynor's single.
Sophomore
Ashley McDonald (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) threw the first 7.0 innings and allowed just three hits and one run while striking out two batters. Freshman
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) picked up the win (2-0), striking out two of the three batters she faced during the eighth inning.
