WAYNE, N.J. -- William Paterson (9-7, 2-2 NJAC) evened its field hockey conference record and celebrated Senior Night with a 4-2 victory against Richard Stockton (3-12, 0-4 NJAC) Oct. 22.
The Pioneers attacked from the opening whistle and were rewarded 1:58 into the contest when senior
Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) passed from the right side to classmate
Christina Ayusa (Runnemede, N.J./Triton), who finished to the right side of the goal. Ayusa later worked a give-and-go with fellow senior
Jodi Feriod (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro), and Feriod buried the ball for a 2-0 edge in the 11th minute.
Junior
Amanda Sheehan (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) found the back of the cage twice during a three-minute span, the first off a Winkelspecht cross that hit the left post and went in at the 16:53 mark, and the second a score off a rebound in the 21st minute.
The Ospreys made things interesting in the middle of the game with two unanswered goals. Senior Elizabeth Quinn scored her first career goal in her 71st appearance, a shot to the left during a penalty corner 4:22 before halftime. Senior Jackie Turner added an unassisted strike in the 37th minute, converting off another Stockton penalty corner.
Senior goalie
Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) had one save for William Paterson, and was aided by defensive saves from junior
Melissa Szeliga (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and sophomore
Meghan Bardeer (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional). Junior Debi O'Kane made eight stops for the Ospreys.
Prior to the contest, WP honored its seniors: Auger, Ayusa, Feriod,
Lauren Frazier (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) and Winkelspecht.
William Paterson will return to action Saturday, Oct. 31, at Montclair State at 1:00 p.m.
