Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Despite taking a lead late in the contest, the William Paterson women's basketball team (9-4) could not finish off host and 21st-ranked Moravian (9-1), losing 70-58 in the championship game of the Moravian/STARTERS Winter Classic Jan. 3.

Freshman guard BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) and sophomore forward Absatu Mustapha (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) were both selected to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 10 points apiece in the final.

Moravian stretched a 30-21 halftime lead to double digits after making the first basket of the second stanza, but the Pioneers continued to battle, eventually forging a 58-57 edge after an Erin Cook (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) bucket with 3:02 to play. However, those points would be the last ones of the game for William Paterson, as the Greyhounds reeled off 13 unanswered points to end the contest. The Pioneers were 0-for-5 down the stretch while Moravian was 9-for-9 from the free–throw line during the final 2:34.

Sophomore forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) led William Paterson with 15 points. Cook chipped in six tallies and a game-best 13 rebounds, and junior forward Deidra Thompson (Prospect Park, N.J./Paterson Eastside) added seven points and five boards.

Tournament MVP Alyssa Bisci paced Moravian with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kirsty Stearns had 10 tallies, while Kate Harrison added nine points and 10 rebounds.

William Paterson will resume conference play Wednesday, Jan. 7, at New Jersey City at 6:00 p.m.
