POMONA, N.J. – William Paterson (11-4, 3-0 NJAC) remained perfect in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's basketball play, pulling away for a 70-54 victory at Richard Stockton (2-11, 0-4 NJAC) Jan. 10.
The Pioneers led 30-25 at the break and quickly built an eight-point advantage to start the second period, but the Ospreys twice rallied to pull within one. With the score 38-37 with 14:15 to play, junior guard
Elisa Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) drained a layup in the lane, igniting a 9-0 run that pushed William Paterson ahead 47-37 with 11:24 remaining. Richard Stockton twice got within four points, the last at the 8:02 mark (52-48), but the Pioneers responded with an 8-0 run during the next three minutes to seize control of the contest (60-48, 4:50).
Junior guard
Erin Cook (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) registered her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore forward
April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) had nine boards to go along with a game-high 19 points. Freshman guard
BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) posted 14 points, three assists and a career-best six steals, and Brown chipped in seven rebounds and a season-high 13 points.
Kristin Sciarrillo (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Julia Fagan (12 points, 10 rebounds) each contributed a double-double for Richard Stockton.
The two teams were nearly even in almost every statistical category with the exception of shooting from behind the two lines. WP was 6-for-16 (.375) from beyond the arc and 24-for-29 (.828) from the charity stripe, while the Ospreys were 1-for-5 (.200) from three-point range and 11-for-14 (.786) from the free-throw line.
William Paterson will return home to face Ramapo Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 6:00 p.m.
