Box Score
WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore
Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, N.J./St.Joseph's-Metuchen) fired in a deflected shot by sophomore forward
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan), ending a scoreless tie in the 84th minute as the William Paterson men's soccer team (4-0-1) shut out Arcadia (2-3) 1-0 in its home opener Sept. 10.
After many close calls and good defensive stops by both teams, the Pioneers finally broke through when Valerio found an opening and delivered an on-target blast. However, Arcadia goalkeeper Jeff Kratohwill punched it away for one of his 10 saves back out to the attacking Pioneers, leaving the rebound for DeMatteo and the game-winning score, his second of the season. Valerio was a threat offensively all night, posting four shots on goal.
Arcadia's best shot attempts were stifled by junior
Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick), who collected three saves to preserve the win for the Pioneers. Sophomore
Matthew Heitmann (Westwood, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) also helped to maintain the clean sheet for WP, clearing a ball off the goal line.
The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, Sept.13, at Western Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.
