Pioneers Fall to Profs at NJAC Tournament, 14-6

WP to Face MSU Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

NEWARK, NJ – Fourth-seeded Rowan defeated fifth-seeded William Paterson, 14-6, in game six of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament May 3 at Bears and Eagles Stadium in Newark, N.J..

The double-elimination tournament will continue Sunday, May 4. Rowan (30-10) will play top-seeded Kean (32-9) at 10:00 a.m., and William Paterson (23-18) will face second-seeded Montclair State (23-15) at 2:00 p.m. The loser of Kean/Rowan takes on the winner of Montclair State/William Paterson at 6:00 p.m., and the remaining teams after Sunday's action will advance to play Monday, May 5. Earlier on Saturday, Montclair State eliminated sixth-seeded Richard Stockton College (22-15), 7-5 in 10 innings, and Kean eliminated the third-seed The College of New Jersey (28-10), 5-4.

Profs' left hander Joe Cichy pitched 7.2 innings, allowing one earned run. Cichy (5-2) recorded eight strikeouts. Right hander Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) took the loss (4-3) on the mound for the Pioneers.

Rowan was led by third baseman Paul Urbanovich with four hits (six at-bats), two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Left fielder Frank Hasenauer added three hits in five at-bats, two doubles and three runs scored. Designated hitter Roland Rodriguez contributed with three RBIs and two runs scored.
For William Paterson, right fielder Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) went one 1-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. Catcher Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) had two hits (three at-bats) and one run scored. Center fielder John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) posted one hit (four at-bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored.

Rowan got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Hasenauer scored on an error and Urbanovich came home on a ground out by Rodriguez. The Profs added eight runs in the sixth. Urbanovich drove in Hasenauer with a double and Ready's double scored Urbanovich. Rodriguez's single plated Ready and right fielder John McMullin. Second baseman Joe Franceschini's single knocked in center fielder Garrett Mull.

The Profs went up 14-0 after tacking on six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Catcher Robert Fox doubled in first baseman Tom Ready and McMullin and Rodriguez came home on a wild pitch. Fox crossed the plate on a ground out by shortstop David Lenig. Urbanovich added a two-run double. William Paterson scored six runs in the bottom half. Elia doubled in Guadango, and third baseman Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) scored on James Gregory's (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) single. Elia and Joyce both scored on back-to-back bases loaded walks. Gregory came in on Guadango's single, and shortstop Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) scored on an error.
